Pre-storm Stillness
Kevin and Jenny stand on the porch as the overcast sky darkens over the island. Jenny checks the moisture in the heirloom seed tin while Kevin watches the barometer, noting the pressure is dropping.
The pressure continues to drop as the tide recedes, exposing the slick rocks of the southern cove. Kevin and Jenny have worked together to secure the garden and the dock against the encroaching storm, but the wind is picking up from the east, carrying the heavy scent of coming rain.
The pressure is dropping fast. We need to secure the garden beds before the rain hits.
Jenny traces the edge of the tin with her thumb, her eyes fixed on the horizon.

I’ll hit the dock first. You cover the beds—I’ll meet you back here in twenty.
walk down to the dock, grab the mallet and oak wedges from the shed, drive them into the mooring ring mortise to take up the play, then check the stern line for chafe and re-serve it if needed.

Don't take too long. The wind is turning.
Jenny tucks the tin into her apron pocket and heads toward the half-weeded garden beds.

(shouting back without turning) On it.
drive the three oak wedges deep into the mooring ring mortise with the mallet, then pack the gaps with oakum from the coil on the dock box, finally snug the through-bolts with the wrench—just shy of stripping.

I'm checking the drainage on the south beds first.
Jenny kneels in the dirt, pulling the extra roll of shade cloth over the tomato rows.

(calling up the path) Ring’s tight for now. Back in five—grab the spare tarp from the porch if the wind freshens past twenty.
shoulder the mallet and wrench, jog back up the path to the cottage porch, hook the spare heavy tarp off the nail, and head for the garden beds to help Jenny batten the shade cloth edges with timber strips and tool-bag weights.

Watch the wind, the north corner is already lifting.
Jenny presses the soil down with her fingers, checking the moisture level for the seedlings.

Toss me the timber strips—I’ll dog the corners while you hold the cloth down.
run to the north corner, stake the lifting edge with a timber strip driven deep by the mallet, then loop a second strip over the cloth and lash it tight to the stake with sail twine from my pocket, repeat at the northeast and northwest corn
