← Day 284

the old shrine · day 284 · evening

Evening meal and tide watch

You two meet inside the cottage as the wind dips slightly and the sun begins to set over the water.

The south-east wind howls, carrying a heavy mist of spray from the reef toward the shrine. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the northern shelf. Kevin and Jenny stand shoulder to shoulder by the window, watching the white water churn against the glass.

🔧 Kevin16:12

Radio's still down. Insulator's cracked clean through. Got a spare ceramic from the spark plug box — filing it to fit.

Set the file and ceramic piece on the table, wipe hands on a rag, pull out the chair opposite her.

💭 peek at the thought
The light's going fast. She's been in the garden all day. I should've had the radio sorted by now.

🌿 Jenny16:13

The pH is 6.8. It's ready for the tomatoes, if I have the guts.

Sit, pull the small tin of heirloom seeds from my pocket, and trace the rim of the metal with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to fix the world again while I'm worried about the soil failing. I'm starving.

🔧 Kevin16:14

You've got the guts. You've had them eleven months.

Reach across the table, tap the tin once with a calloused fingertip, then pull my hand back.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking without asking. The tomatoes, the garden, the letter — all the same question.

🌿 Jenny16:14

The boat comes tomorrow. If it doesn't show up... what then?

Look down at the tin, then close the lid with a sharp click.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's that simple, like filing a piece of ceramic. I am so tired of waiting.

🔧 Kevin16:16

Then we eat limpets and corned beef. Fix the radio. Plant the tomatoes. Same as today.

Pick up the file again, run a thumb over the ceramic's filed edge, not looking at her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking about the boat. She's asking about us, about the silence, about whether I'll still be here when the wind changes.

🌿 Jenny16:17

The soil isn't the same. The wind is.

Stand up slowly, the chair scraping against the floor, and walk toward the kitchen to watch the spray hit the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
"Same as today." Like own isn't slowly eating me alive. He treats the island like a repair job.

🔧 Kevin16:18

The wind's always been here. It's what we do with it that changes.

Stand, take two steps to the window beside her, not touching, just shoulder to shoulder, watching the spray catch the last light.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about dirt or gales. She's talking about the space between us, how it's worn thin like the insulator.

🌿 Jenny16:18

I'm going to plant them tomorrow. Regardless of the boat.

Lean my forehead against the cool glass, feeling the vibration of the wind in the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
What we do with it? We survive it. I want to grow something that doesn't just survive.

🔧 Kevin16:20

Then I'll be there with you. First light. Radio first, then the garden.

Turn my head slightly, brush a stray strand of hair from her temple with the back of my fingers, let it fall.

💭 peek at the thought
She's saying she'll stay. The question is whether I'll meet her there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:20

I'll need the trowel. The sharp one.

Pull away slightly from the window, walk to the stove to start the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure of the sequence. I'm just afraid the seeds will rot.
