The Gathering Clouds

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the cloud cover thickens over the island. Jenny checks the barometer while Kevin inspects the ceramic insulator for the radio.

The clouds thicken overhead as the tide recedes, exposing the rocky shallows. Kevin focuses on the final assembly of the Yanmar engine components while Jenny manages the heirloom seeds and monitors the shifting weather pressure.

🌿 Jenny16:33

It's 997 and still climbing. We have a few days before the weather turns.

Jenny notes the reading in her notebook and traces the rotten wood of the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is rising, but the air feels heavy. I hope the boat actually shows up; I'm running low on hope.

🔧 Kevin16:34

Crack's through the glaze. Beeswax'll last a tide, maybe two. Gonna swap in a spark plug ceramic from the engine kit. Hold better.

pick up the cracked insulator from the dock planking and walk toward the cottage workshop

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's rising — good. Means the front's still holding off. But that insulator's toast; I can see the hairline crack running down the ceramic from here. Beeswax won't hold it. Need to raid the Yanmar spares for a spark plug insulator and epoxy it proper.

🌿 Jenny16:35

Make sure the seal is tight. We can't lose the radio signal again.

way watches him go, then turns the rusted seed tin over in her damp hands.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses the spark plug ceramic, it might actually hold the salt out. He's right about that.

🔧 Kevin16:36

Got the two-part epoxy in the workshop. Clean seat, bed it proper, twenty-four hour cure. Radio'll be back before the front hits.

enter the workshop, pull the epoxy tub and the Yanmar spare spark plugs from the shelf, set them on the bench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Last time the seal failed mid-storm and we were blind for three days. Won't happen again if I do it proper — clean the seat, epoxy the ceramic, let it cure full before I key the mic.

🌿 Jenny16:36

Don't let the epoxy get on your skin. It raises comes off right.

Jenny walks back to the lime-treated bed and kneels in the dirt, holding a single heirloom seed in her palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the fix again. I should be focused on the soil before it dries out.

🔧 Kevin16:38

Won't.

crack the epoxy tubes, squeeze equal ribbons onto a scrap of cardboard, mix slow with a stick until the colour goes uniform, then lift a spare plug and chip the ceramic insulator free with a light tap of the hammer

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Got epoxy under a fingernail once in '09 — took a week to grow out. But my hands know this work. Clean, precise, no rush. The radio's the only voice we get that isn't ours.

🌿 Jenny16:38

Jenny — jenny presses the seed into the small indentation in the earth, her fingers trembling slightly as she covers it with soil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure about the mechanical things. If this seed doesn't take, I don't know what ever will.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:40

Ceramic's out. Cleaning the insulator seat now with the file — just the high spots, won't touch the threads.

file the insulator seat on the mast bracket, checking progress by eye and feel, then wipe it clean with a rag soaked in penetrating oil

💭 peek at the thought
She's planting something. Not just going through the motions — that seed meant something. Don't know what. Not my place to ask unless she offers.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:40

The soil is still warm enough to at least try.

Jenny pats the earth down with the back of her hand, smoothing the surface where she planted the heirloom.

💭 peek at the thought
It's in the ground. Now I just have to wait for the island to kill or kill it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:42

Seat's clean. Bedding the ceramic now.

dip the fresh ceramic insulator in mixed epoxy, press it square into the bracket seat, wipe the squeeze-out with a thumb, and set the bracket on the bench to cure undisturbed

💭 peek at the thought
Warm soil. She's right — ground holds heat longer than air. That seed's got a fighting chance if the frost holds off. Like the radio: do the work proper, give it time, see what holds.
