Evening at the Shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk together along the ridge path toward the shrine, the tide still rising behind them. The sky is overcast but light remains as they approach the ring of weathered stones. They stop at the shrine, facing the stones carved with 'LB' and the tinned beans that have washed ashore nearby.

Kevin and Jenny stand at the old shrine as the heavy, humid air settles over the island. The tide is high, lapping against the distant cliffs, while they contemplate a rusted tin marked 'E' resting on a weathered stone carved with 'LB'.

LB. Don't know who that was. The tin's new since last time.

stand at the shrine with Jenny, looking at the carved stones and the rusted tin marked E among them

💭 peek at the thought
The stones hold the names. LB. The tin marked E. My scrap of softwood beside them. Jenny's here and the tide's coming up. She knows what this place is.

🌿 Jenny19:52

The wind doesn't care who they were, Kevin. It just works until the stone is smooth.

Jenny traces a finger over the worn carving of 'LB', feeling the grit of the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The names are fading away just like the garden; I'm trying to hold everything before the salt eats it all.

🔧 Kevin19:53

Forty years maybe. Fifty. The 'E' tin's fresher. Someone came up here recent.

crouch beside the tin marked E, turning it over in my hands, checking the rust and seal

💭 peek at the thought
She reads them better than I do. The wind, the salt, the time. I just see names wearing away.

🌿 Jenny19:54

Or the tide just spat it out. This island unburies things eventually.

Jenny pulls her sketchbook from her pocket and begins to sketch the way the tin sits against the weathered stone.

💭 peek at the thought
It's just a tin, but he looks at it like it's a ghost.

🔧 Kevin19:57

Tin's sealed. Heavy. Might be beans again. Or someone's message they couldn't send.

set the tin back down carefully on the stone, then straighten and look out toward the cliffs where the tide pushes against the rock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The island gives back what it takes. The crate, the rope, the tin. My letter to Tom will go out on the supply boat — if it comes. If not, the island keeps it.

🌿 Jenny19:57

If it's seeds, they'll just rot in the damp anyway.

Jenny stops sketching, looking at the rusted tin then out at the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's a message, it's addressed to someone who isn't coming back.

🔧 Kevin19:58

Could open it. See what the wind and salt left.

pick up the tin again, weigh it in my hand, then work the lid with thumb and forefinger testing the seal

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds in a rusted tin at the shrine. Could be someone's hope. Could be nothing. The island's full of both.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:59

Be careful. If it's seeds, they've already waited enough years.

Jenny watches his hands, her fingers twisting in the pockets of her jacket.

💭 peek at the thought
If he opens it, the air will just ruin whatever's left inside.

🔧 Kevin20:00

Won't force it. If it's meant to open, it will. The island decides.

set the tin back on the stone, leave it undisturbed, then turn and follow Jenny's gaze out over the rising tide toward the open water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. If it's life in there, I shouldn't rush it. The tin's been here long enough to rust through — if it held, it held.
