The Eve of the Storm

The wind picks up, and the first heavy drops of rain begin to hit the dust on the roof.

The air is heavy and humid as the pressure continues to drop to 998 hPa. The tide is rising, pushing against the dock. Kevin and Jenny have secured the generator and the dinghy, but the garden remains vulnerable to the sharpening gusts before the storm fully breaks in.

Storm's moving faster than I liked. Going to secure the dinghy and the generator.

Walk down to the dock, check all dinghy mooring lines and chafe points, tighten the forward spring and both stern lines, then grab the canvas cover from the porch and lash it over the generator housing.

💭 peek at the thought
Front's here earlier than the barometer said. Need to check the dinghy lines one more time and get the generator cover on before the wind shifts hard west.

I'll check the garden tarp!

Walk quickly to the garden and check the corners of the heavy-duty tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving in a straight line again. Just tasks and tools. I can't even tell if he's worried or just focused.

Northwest corner's loose again. I'll bring the sandbag from the shed.

Run to the garden shed, grab the sandbag, and jog back to stake down the loose corner of the heavy-duty tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
Good, she's on it. I saw that corner lifting earlier—wind'll tear it if we don't weight it down now.

🌿 Jenny01:02

Thanks. I'll double-check the tomato stakes.

Walk along the tomato row, pressing the twine firmly against the stakes and checking for any seedlings leaning too far.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always anticipating the failure points. I'm the one who knows the plants, but he knows the wind.

🔧 Kevin01:04

Generator's next. I'll have it covered in two minutes.

Jog back to the porch, throw the canvas over the generator, and secure all four corners with the bungee cords I keep looped on the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got it. Time to finish what I started—get that generator covered and then check the radio mast one last time before it really blows.

🌿 Jenny01:05

Be careful with the bypasses, the gusts are getting sharper.

Walk to the garden bed and gather the heavy rocks to place on the corners of the shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that canvas, it'll rips the grommets. I own weight the edges down.

🔧 Kevin01:06

Right. Running a line over the top instead.

Grab the coil of half-inch rope from the porch rail, throw it over the covered generator, pull it tight across the center, and secure both ends to the porch posts with clove hitches.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead—gusts'll find any gap in the bungees. Better to run a rope over the top and weight it down proper.

🌿 Jenny01:06

The pressure is dropping fast. We need to get the tools inside.

Walk to the garden bed and check if the soil is holding the lime.

💭 peek at the thought
At least it's not flapping like a wing now. The air is too heavy, about to break.
