Evening at the shore

The tide is at its lowest point, leaving the dock pilings dripping and mossy. The rain has slowed to a mist, and the air is heavy with humidity.

The steady rain continues to drum against the shrine, turning the ground into a slick, dark clay. The tide is fully out, exposing the jagged rocks and tide pools of the shore. The water tank is finally at the brim, overflowing splashing slightly.

🌿 Jenny01:46

Jenny — run a finger over the worn carving of a name on the nearest stone.

💭 peek at the thought
This place feels older than the lighthouse. The stones are practically melting back into the earth. I'm starving, but I can't stop looking at these names.

🔧 Kevin01:46

Kevin — lean against the nearest standing stone, watching her trace the carving, the gray rag still tucked in my back pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's touching the stone I carved. The softwood scrap with 'I'm still here' beside the 'E' stone. Wonder if she knows I put it there, or if she thinks it's just another name worn by salt and time.

🌿 Jenny01:48

Do you think they were keepers? Or just people who got stuck here?

Step back from the stone and look up at him, squinting through the mist.

💭 peek at the thought
He's just hovering. He wants to say something about the weather or the engine, but he's actually looking at me.

🔧 Kevin01:48

Could be both. Keepers got stuck same as anyone. Difference is they chose it first.

pull the rag from my pocket, wipe grease from my thumb and forefinger, then let it hang loose at my side

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the names on the stones. The ones worn smooth by decades of wind and rain. I've wondered the same thing, standing here when the fog rolls in thick enough to hide the cottage.

🌿 Jenny01:50

Choice is a heavy word.

tighten my grip on the bucket of limpets and start the walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Chose it? I haven't even planted a seed yet and I'm already waiting for the fail.

🔧 Kevin01:50

Kevin — fall into step beside her, boots finding the worn path down the ridge without looking, the mist catching on my beard

💭 peek at the thought
She's walking away. Bucket in hand, limpets sloshing. She doesn't wait for an answer. Maybe there isn't one she'd believe.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:52

I'm going to make the limpets with the sea beet. If there's any corned beef fat left in the skillet.

shift the weight of the bucket to my other hand, glancing at him sideways.

💭 peek at the thought
He does that—navigates by instinct while I'm still calculating the distance. I can feel the hunger headache starting to pulse.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin01:52

Fat's in the skillet. On the stove. Still warm.

lengthen my stride to reach the cottage door first, pull it open and hold it against the mist for her

💭 peek at the thought
Corned beef fat. She's asking without asking. There's half a tin's worth rendered down from lunch. She knows it's there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:54

Thanks.

walk through the door and head straight for the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being attentive. It's almost enough to make me forget how quiet we've been for the last month.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin01:54

Kevin — step inside, let the door swing shut behind me, hang the gray rag on the hook by the door and move to the workbench to check the starter cord frayed end

💭 peek at the thought
She's at the stove. The skillet's on the back burner where I left it, fat solidified in a pale yellow disk. She'll melt it down, toss the limpets, then the sea beet last so it keeps some bite. She cooks like she does everything — practical, no waste.
