Breakfast and Planning

They finish the meal as the light dims slightly behind the heavy clouds. The humidity rises, signaling inevitable rain.

The midday sun beats down on the garden as the humidity rises with the wet season. Kevin and Jenny work side-by-side under the shade cloth, the smell of damp earth and drying herbs filling the warm air. The tide is creeping up toward the dock pilings, and the supply boat is still five days away.

I'll do the dishes. You stay off that ankle.

collect the bowls and walk to the cottage sink

💭 peek at the thought
Should clear the table and check the generator oil before the rain hits proper. The cedar cores need sorting too — three sound ones, maybe enough for a sister knee on the dock beam if the supply boat brings the rest of the hardware. Jenny's ankle won't like the damp.

🌿 Jenny05:58

Thanks. I'm just going to check the tin.

Limp slowly toward the porch shelf and pick up the heirloom seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the tone is so clinical. Like I'm a specimen he's monitoring.

(rinse the bowls) The tin's damp but the seeds inside are dry enough. I checked the silica packet this morning — still blue.

wipe the counter with a rag and move to the generator to check the oil level

💭 peek at the thought
She's going to look at the seeds again. Same as every afternoon. I wonder if she's counting how many are still viable or just needing to touch something that might grow.

🌿 Jenny06:00

I'll be the judge of "dry enough," Kevin.

Open the tin and carefully inspect the edges of the packets for any new signs of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's keeping a closer eye on my things than I am. It's almost suffocating.

🔧 Kevin06:02

Fair. I'll grab the fresh silica from the supply crate while I'm out there.

finish checking the generator oil (it's at the full mark), then walk to the supply crate near the porch to get a fresh silica packet and a dry cloth for the seed tin

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to be picky. One moldy packet can spoil the whole tray. I should've re-dried them with the spare silica when I had the chance — but the generator took priority. Now it's damp again from this humidity.

🌿 Jenny06:02

Bring the dry cloth too.

Sit on the bench and carefully wipe the condensation off the outside of the tin with the hem of my shirt.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's being useful for once, but I need to see these seeds without him hovering.

🔧 Kevin06:04

Here.

hand her the fresh silica packet and the dry cloth, then lean against the doorframe watching the clouds thicken over the water

💭 peek at the thought
She's gentle with it. More gentle than she is with most things. The tin's just metal and rust but she treats it like it might break.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:04

Thanks.

Drop the new silica packet into the tin and pull out one packet of heirloom seeds to inspect for mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's just watching me. I can't even open a tin without feeling his eyes on my back.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:06

(quiet) It's clean. I re-sorted it after the last check.

push off the doorframe and walk slowly to the garden to check the tarp corners — one's flapping again in the rising wind

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the basil again. Same packet every time. I know it's clean — I sorted it myself two days ago. But she needs to see it for herself. I won't argue.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny06:06

I'll check it myself.

Close the tin with a sharp clack and stand up, following him toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He re-sorted them? I knew exactly where every packet was. He's hovering over my work.
