The Storm Breaches

The first heavy drops hit the tin roof as the wind picks up at the corners of the island.

The night remains warm and still as the dry season heat holds steady. Kevin and Jenny rest in the cottage, preparing mentally for the supply boat's arrival in five days.

Wind’s picking up. I’m going to check the dinghy lines — you stay off that ankle.

walk to the dock, grab the marlin spike from the tool bag, and inspect the forward spring line and mooring ring for chafe or slack.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s shifting west and the barometer’s holding at 1007 — not a drop yet, but the sky’s tightening. Jenny’s ankle’s bad, and if this blows up, we’ll need the dinghy secure before dark. I should’ve checked the lines earlier.

I'm staying in! Just... be careful with the ring. The oak wedges didn't hold.

Limp to the wood stove and move the heirloom seed tin to the rear shelf to keep it dry.

💭 peek at the thought
Of course he's going out. He can't stand the sound of the rain if he isn't doing something about it. My ankle is throbbing, but I can't just sit here while the air gets this heavy.

Heard. I’ll sort it.

inspect the mooring ring mortise, test the ring’s movement under foot pressure, then retrieve the mallet and remaining oak wedges from the workshop to re-wedge it tighter.

💭 peek at the thought
Oak wedges split — I knew they would. Cedar’s next, but I need harder wood or steel. The ring’s shifting under load; if the wind backs southwest, the dinghy’ll saw through the mortise. I’ll drive oak again, deeper this time, and back it with a sister knee if I can find the timber.

🌿 Jenny06:32

Jenny — sit heavily in the kitchen chair and pull the antibiotic blister pack toward me, staring at the remaining two doses.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still trying to wedge it. He doesn't realize that the wood just splits under the pressure; it needs something structural, not a shim. I can't even look at him when he's in "fix-it" mode.

🔧 Kevin06:34

Kevin — finish seating the oak wedges firmly with the mallet, then apply penetrating oil to the stainless through-bolts and torque them to 35Nm with the wrench to clamp the ring solid.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s thinking about the infection — the one from the rat bite she won’t talk about. Two doses left. If it flares, we’re on our own until the boat. I should check the wound, but she’ll shut me down. Better to keep the lines tight and the fire hot — that’s what I can control.

🌿 Jenny06:34

Jenny — pop one of the remaining antibiotic pills from the blister pack and swallow it with a sip of water from the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually using the torque wrench. He's treating the dock like the engine again—trying to force the world into a specific measurement. I wonder if he thinks the oil will stop the salt from eating everything.
