← Day 30

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

MIDDAY DAY 30

Kevin is at the dock watching the high tide, while Jenny is in the cottage sorting seeds.

Kevin returned to the cottage from the dock as rain intensified. Jenny tested the water supply and continued drying heirloom seeds by the stove, eating a cold boiled limpet while watching the storm build.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the edge of the dock, watching the water lap high against the new pilings.

🔧 Kevin00:36

Kevin — walk back toward the cottage, boots squelching on wet gravel

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's higher than I expected for this hour. Barometer was right — pressure's holding but the swell's pushing water in. Two planks still rotten on the seaward end. Dinghy's riding hard against the cleat.

🔧 Kevin00:41

Kevin — climb the path to the cottage porch, wipe boots on the mat, push the door open

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's eased to a mist. Cottage smoke drifting low — Jenny's got the stove going. Smell of boiled limpets and sea beet. My back's complaining from the ladder. Need to check the generator oil before dark, and the coax still needs doing at first light. Crate's sitting on the beach above the wrack line. Tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You sit at the wooden table, checking the moisture levels of the heirloom packets.

🌿 Jenny00:35

(to the empty room) This island doesn't owe me anything. It just... is.

check water test strips against the tank sample, then return to the stove to fan the seed packets with a canvas sheet, watching for any new mold blooms.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is still crawling up the walls, getting into everything. These packets need to be completely bone-dry before I can even think about planting. I should check the water test strips again—maybe the tank's quality has dropped. Or maybe I'm just tired of waiting for the boat.

🌿 Jenny00:39

Jenny — pick up one of the boiled limpets from the bowl and eat it cold, staring out at the grey lashing waves.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is clean for now, but the air feels heavy enough to swallow. If the rain doesn't break, the epoxy will never cure, and those seeds will rot in the tin.
