The Rising Humidity

The overcast air hangs heavy over the tomato rows as the humidity climbs toward the rain. Jenny checks the soil pH in the lime beds while Kevin inspects the tension on the new shade cloth.

The morning air is heavy and humid, smelling of salt and damp earth. The tide is receding quickly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Kevin and Jenny are at the garden, preparing for the coming rain as the supply boat approaches in four days.

The pH is holding. Right in the sweet spot.

Walk to the cottage porch to get the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
6.9. Perfect. Now comes the part where I actually have to commit.

Holding steady then.

Walk to the cottage porch and check the yanmar test log on the table, then scan the barometer reading through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. The lime held. Now if the rain doesn't wash it all out before the roots take hold.

Don't get too distracted by the numbers, Kevin. The air is getting thick.

Open the seed tin and carefully select three heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's avoiding the garden. He's avoiding the actual work of living here.

Feels like it. You got the ones that like it damp?

Step off the porch and walk to the garden’s east corner, where the soil’s still loose from yesterday’s weeding, and kneel to plant the three seeds Jenny picked, pressing each one in just below the surface and patting the soil back gently.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right. The pressure’s climbing slow but the air’s like wet wool. Storm’s not far.

🌿 Jenny06:44

I didn't ask you to...

Stand still, watching his hands in the dirt, fingers twitching with the urge to correct his depth.

💭 peek at the thought
Why is he doing it? I can't let him take this from me, but I can't bring myself to stop him.

🔧 Kevin06:44

Show me then.

Sit back on my heels and wipe soil from my fingers onto my trousers, waiting, watching her hands.

💭 peek at the thought
She didn't ask. She also didn't say stop. Her fingers know the depth better than mine. Let her show me.

🌿 Jenny06:46

You're planting them too shallow. The salt wind will scour them right back out.

Kneel beside him and use a finger to press the seeds a fraction deeper, then pat the soil firm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's daring me. Or he's offering. I can't tell which, and I hate not knowing.

🔧 Kevin06:46

Thanks.

Take the trowel from my belt and lightly loosen the soil around the planted seeds, then press it firm again with the flat of my palm, matching Jenny’s touch.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right again. A millimetre more and the wind won’t get them. I felt it but didn’t trust it.

🌿 Jenny06:48

Leave them be now. You'll disturb the root zone if you keep fussing.

Take the trowel back and stand up, brushing the dirt from my knees.

💭 peek at the thought
He's mimicking me. It's almost sweet, if it weren't so irritating.
