Evening at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny return to the cottage as the light fades. The sound of the tide hitting the dock pilings is louder in the twilight.

Kevin went to the dock to inspect the mooring ring and found it was shifting under the load. Jenny stayed at the shrine, sketching the local flora morphology. They met back at the cottage as the evening cooled.

🔧 Kevin07:16

I’m going down to the dock for ten minutes. The mooring ring’s been shifting under load—want to make sure it’s secure before the supply boat tries to tie up in four days.

walk down to the dock, lantern in hand, to inspect the mooring ring and test its play under manual pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
The light’s going fast, and the tide’s talking louder under the dock. I should check the mooring ring one more time before dark—see if those oak wedges are holding or if I need to redo it with bronze bolts tonight.

Don't stay too long, the air is turning.

Sit on the porch step, pull out the sketchbook, and begin drawing the texture of the lime-covered stones.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's looking at the dock and not my ankle. I hope the lime held the acidity.

🔧 Kevin07:18

Won't be long.

reach the dock and crouch at the mooring ring, gripping the iron with both hands to heave it sideways and feel the mortise movement, lantern light catching the oak wedges I drove yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the air's got that metallic bite to it, pressure dropping faster than the barometer shows. But the ring's got to hold. If the supply boat can't tie off clean, we lose the mail, the spares, the news.

🌿 Jenny07:18

Jenny — sketch the jagged edge of a weathered stone, pressing the pencil hard into the paper to capture the depth of the cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the wedges. If they split again, he'll be frustrated, and I can't deal with his frustration tonight.

🔧 Kevin07:20

(grunting as I heave) Oak’s shot. Going to reset with the bronze sleeve and bolts—should hold fast this time.

extract the split oak wedges with the crowbar, then slide the bronze drift into the mortise to true the hole before inserting the first 150mm stainless through-bolt with washer and nyloc nut.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring shifts a full finger's width—too much. Those oak wedges are split and useless. I need to pull them out and reset with the bronze drift and longer through-bolts I fabricated last week. It’ll take twenty minutes, but it’s the only way to trust it.

🌿 Jenny07:21

(calling out) Use the torque wrench if you can!

Close the sketchbook and rub my swollen ankle, staring at the darkening line of the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally doing it properly. The bronze was the only way.

🔧 Kevin07:22

Got it. Third bolt’s in—now torquing to spec.

attach the torque wrench to the bolt head, turn slowly until the dial clicks at 35Nm, then repeat for the second and third bolts, checking each for true alignment in the mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s watching me. Not just the work—she’s seeing the strain in my shoulders, the way I brace when I lift. She knows I won’t stop till it’s right. And she’s right about the torque—35Nm is the spec, and I’ve got the wrench in my belt.

🌿 Jenny07:22

(softly) Good. Come back soon, it's getting cold.

Stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle shifts, and walk back toward the cottage light.

💭 peek at the thought
The click sounds solid. Maybe the dock will actually hold the boat this time.

🔧 Kevin07:24

Ring’s secure. Heading in.

gather tools, wipe hands on trousers, and walk back toward the cottage light, the lantern swinging gently in my hand as the tide hushes behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring’s solid now—no play under hand pressure, the bronze drift seated true, all three bolts at 35Nm. It’ll hold the boat’s pull, the tide’s jerk, the wind’s yank. I’ve done what I can. Time to go in before the damp settles in my bones.

🌿 Jenny07:24

I'll put the kettle on.

Limp into the kitchen and reach for the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I am. My ankle is killing me.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin07:26

Thanks.

hang the lantern on the porch nail, step inside, and wash my hands at the sink with cold water and a rough rag, then move to the table and pull out the letter to Tom from the oilskin bag.

💭 peek at the thought
The kettle’s already on the stove—she’s been waiting. I’ll hang the lantern, wash the salt and grit off my hands, and sit where it’s warm. No more work tonight. Just food, quiet, and the weight of the day lifting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny07:26

I'll get the tea.

Fill the kettle with water and set it on the stove, glancing at the letter on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The letter. He's thinking about the exit again. Or he's just thinking about the logistics.
