Evening at the garden

Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden as the sun lowers. The tarp corner flaps loose in a rising breeze. The Yanmar sits mounted on the dinghy at the dock, ready for a load test. The supply boat is due in three days.

Kevin and Jenny struggled to secure the garden tarp against a rising onshore breeze. Their attempts to pin the edges down with stakes failed as the wind lifted the corners of the dry soil, so they eventually retreated to the cottage to prepare a meal of limpets.

The wind's picking up. The tarp is fighting me again.

Reach down and tug at the flapping corner of the garden tarp, trying to pin it back into the soil with a heavy stone.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I've spent too much time sketching and not enough time eating. The garden looks like a battlefield of weeds and plastic.

Hold it there. I’ll drive the stake deeper.

walk over to the loose tarp corner, grab the mallet and a spare stake from the shed nearby, then drive the stake firmly into the soil to re-secure the tarp, pulling the fabric tight as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp’s corner came loose again—salt and wind working the stakes. I should re-secure it before it tears or flaps all night. Jenny’s already wrestling with it; I can help without words.

🌿 Jenny08:14

Thanks. I thought I had it, but the soil is like powder today.

Stand up slowly, brushing the grit from my palms onto my trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient. It's almost irritating how he just fixes things without needing to talk about why they broke.

Stakes won't hold in this. I'll bury a log for the corner.

walk to the driftwood pile near the dock, drag a salt-bleached log back to the garden, dig a shallow trench at the tarp corner, lay the log in it, pull the tarp tight over it, and bury it with soil and stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil's dry as bone—no surprise with this wind and no rain for weeks. She's right; stakes won't hold in powder. Need to bury a deadman or weight it with something heavier than stones.

🌿 Jenny08:16

That'll actually hold. I was just playing whack-a-mole with the wind.

Lean against the garden wall, watching him work, and let out a small, tired laugh.

💭 peek at the thought
A deadfall anchor. Practical, permanent. He's building for a storm that hasn't arrived yet, or maybe he's just tired of the flapping sound.

🔧 Kevin08:16

I’ll start clearing the east bed tomorrow. First thing at dawn.

finish tamping the soil over the log, step back to check the tarp is flat and secure, then wipe my hands on my trousers and head toward the cottage to wash up before dinner.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired—more than just from the wind. The garden’s been half-weeds too long. I said I’d build that sensory garden for her, but all we’ve got is a tarp and good intentions. Time to stop talking and start doing.

🌿 Jenny08:18

Don't exhaust yourself. The weeds have had ten years; they can handle one more night.

Walk slowly toward the cottage after him, my footsteps heavy in the sand.

💭 peek at the thought
Dawn. He's always so certain about the schedule. The east bed is a jungle of bindweed; it'll take days, not a morning.

🔧 Kevin08:18

I'm not exhausting myself. Just starting.

pause at the cottage door, pull the galvanized bucket from under the leaking shutter and set it aside, then go inside to wash my hands at the sink before lighting the stove for the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. One more night won't change the weeds. But I've said "tomorrow" for eleven months. The supply boat comes in three days—maybe the new water test kit means we can finally check the well properly, maybe the seed potatoes mean planting. Maybe I just keep finding reasons to wait.
