The Heavy Night

You and Jenny sit together at the table, the last of the corned beef between you as the shadows stretch long across the floor.

Kevin and Jenny sit at the wooden table in the cottage under the fading light of the dry season. Kevin reaches over and covers Jenny's hand, his thumb brushing her knuckles in a slow gesture of presence. He nudges the plate of corned beef toward her, watching her face for a reaction while the exhaustion of the day hangs between them.

🔧 Kevin13:34

(I don’t speak. I push the last of the corned beef toward her with my fork, then fold my arms on the table and look out the window at the fading light.)

Sit still at the table, shoulders loose but present, watching Jenny eat. After a moment, I reach over and cover her hand with mine — not to hold, just to let her feel I’m here. I don’t move until she does.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us isn’t empty — it’s full of everything we haven’t said. I watch her hands, how they tremble just slightly when she reaches for the last piece of meat. She’s hurting more than she lets on. I should say something. But what? ‘I’m sorry’ feels too small. ‘I miss Tom’ feels like it’s not about her. So I say nothing. Just stay here. Let her know I’m not leaving.

🌿 Jenny13:35

Eat, Jen. The garden can wait until tomorrow.

Kevin covers her hand with his and waits for her to look up.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired. I can see it in the way she's holding the fork.

🔧 Kevin13:36

(Voice low, rough from disuse) "Already ate. You need it more."

Keep my hand over hers, thumb brushing once over her knuckles — light, deliberate. Don’t look at the food. Don’t look at the window. Look at her face. Wait.

💭 peek at the thought
She called me Jen. Not Kevin. Not love. Not anything soft. Just Jen — like she’s talking to herself. Or like she’s tired enough to slip. I don’t correct her. I don’t pull my hand back. The garden’s the last thing on my mind. The dock’s half-held together with epoxy and hope. The Yanmar still shudders. Tom’s letter sits in my pocket, unmailed, unread by anyone but me. But right now? Right now it’s just this. Her hand under mine. The stove cooling. The tide turning. I’ll eat if she eats. I’ll stay if she stays.

🌿 Jenny13:37

I'm not that hungry, Kevin. I've been working all day.

Kevin squeezes her hand gently and nudges the plate closer to her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. She'll starve herself trying to finish those seed trays.

🔧 Kevin13:38

Didn't ask if you were hungry. Said you need it.

Keep the plate where it is — close to her, not pushed, not forced. My hand stays on hers, thumb still on her knuckles. I pick up my own fork, spear a cold piece of corned beef, and eat it slow. Deliberate. Chew. Swallow.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s lying. She hasn’t eaten since breakfast — maybe not even then. I saw her skip the limpets. Saw her wince bending over the seed trays. The infection’s tracking. The antibiotics are nearly gone. And she’s sitting here telling me she’s not hungry because she’s been working. Like work earns you the right to fade. I don’t argue. Arguing takes breath she doesn’t have to spare. But I’m not letting it go either.

🌿 Jenny13:39

Just a few bites, then. You're shaking a little.

Kevin watches her, waiting for the hand to move toward the plate.

💭 peek at the thought
way's going to fight. I can see the set of her jaw.

🔧 Kevin13:40

(Quiet, almost to the table) "Not shaking. Just... tired."

Don’t reach for the plate. Don’t pull my hand back. Let her see the tremor in my fingers where they rest on the wood. Let her see me not hide it. Breathe slow. Once. Twice. Then — finally — pick up the fork. Take a bite. Chew. Swallow.

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed. Of course she noticed. My hands have been steady through blown gaskets, storm rigging, forty minutes in black water — but tonight they tremor like a leaf. Not from cold. Not from hunger. From the weight of everything I don’t say. Tom. The dock. The Yanmar. Her ankle. The letter in my pocket. The silence that’s become a language of its own. She’s trying to take care of me. Again. While she’s the one burning up. I should pull away. Make a joke. Say it’s the heat. But she’s watching. Waiting. And for once — I don’t know how to fake it.

🌿 Jenny13:41

I know. But the island isn't going anywhere tonight.

Kevin watches her hand, waiting for the first movement.

💭 peek at the thought
She's going to give in eventually. Don't push it.
