Evening at the shrine

They walk the ridge path together as the light slants low, the barometer steady in Kevin's pocket. The standing stones wait on the ridge, the carved 'E' stone and the softwood scrap inscribed 'I'm still here' beside it. A tin of beans rests at the shrine's center, washed ashore since their last visit. The wind carries salt and the sound of the tide turning.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin15:59

She's been here. Left the beans, the stone, the wood. Trying to tell me something without saying it.

walk up to the shrine, pick up the tin of beans, turn the 'E' stone over in my palm, then place it back where it was, beside the softwood scrap.

💭 peek at the thought
The 'E' stone and the scrap — she left them here for me to find. She's thinking ahead, planting hope where the wind won't take it. I don't know if she means for me or for after, but I feel it like a line pulled taut.

It's a message in a bottle, just own the bottle.

Trace the weathered edge of the stone with a dusty thumb, wipe the grit from my fingernails, and look out over the shimmering heat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's leaving markers like she's afraid I'll forget, or maybe she's afraid the island will.

Sixteen days in my pocket. Didn't open it. Didn't burn it. Just... carried it.

pull the letter from my pocket, hold it out to her — sealed, salt-stained at the edges — then let my hand fall back to my side without releasing it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tin. She's talking about the letter in my pocket. Sixteen days. I've carried it like a spare part I don't know where to fit.

🌿 Jenny16:03

The boat is coming in five days, Kevin.

Look at the paper in his hand, then back at the shimmering sand where the garden is still weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding the weight of those words and I'm just holding the weight of the heat.

🔧 Kevin16:03

Five days.

turn the letter over in my hand, thumb catching the flap, then tuck it back into my pocket — not deep, just where my fingers can find it.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days. The boat comes, the letter goes. Or I keep carrying it. She's giving me the timeline I asked for without asking.

🌿 Jenny16:05

We need to check the tins. The humidity is too high.

Wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a dusty hand and turn toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, I'll have own but these seeds and these stones.

🔧 Kevin16:05

Tin E first. The one from the shrine.

fall in step beside her on the ridge path, boots finding the worn track down toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's changing the subject. Or she's not. The tins, the humidity, the garden — it's all the same work. Keeping things alive. I follow because that's what I do.

🌿 Jenny16:07

Right. way's seeds can't take the damp.

Walk down the slope, feeling the weakness in my knees, watching the heat shimmer over the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's thinking about the seeds, but I'm thinking about the rot in the wood.

🔧 Kevin16:07

We'll reseal them with wax. Melt it slow, pour it hot.

quicken my pace just enough to walk beside her, not ahead, not behind — matching her step as we cut across the open sand toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Her knees. She's hiding it again. I saw her favor it at the seed trays. I should say something. But if I do, it becomes real. And then I have to fix it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:09

Maybe if we use enough.

Keep my eyes on the cottage roof, counting the cracks in the thatch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure about the wax. I'm not sure about the soil.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:09

We'll use what we've got. Then we'll see.

reach the cottage porch, pause, and set my hand on the warped doorframe — not to open it, just to steady us both for a breath before we go inside.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not really talking about wax. She's talking about effort. About whether we're doing enough. I want to tell her we are. But the dock's still rotting, the engine still shudders, the garden's still weeds. And the letter's still in my pocket.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny16:11

We'll see.

Lean my weight against the hot wood of the door, waiting until I can breathe.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a fix, and I'm just looking for a way to stay.
