Mist and the Falling Tide
The mist thickens as the tide reaches its low point, exposing barnacled rocks. A cool breeze picks up slightly from the north.
Kevin drove the south piling brace home with Jenny's help, the drift pin seating firmly despite some grain splitting. Jenny then surveyed the north ridge Carex transect and began sketching sea beet salt glands at the hilltop. Kevin proceeded to test the Yanmar engine under load in the dinghy and checked the garden tarp corners.

Brace is cut to length. Need to drive it home before the tide turns. You want the other end of the maul or the drift pin?
set the brace against the piling, line up the pre-drilled holes, hold it steady with my shoulder

The maul. I'll hold the pin steady.
step beside him and take the heavy hammer, bracing my weight against the rotting wood to keep the brace aligned.

On three. One — two — three.
swing the drift pin down hard into the bolt hole, driving it through the brace and into the piling core

Watch the grain. It's splitting.
use the maul to deliver a heavy blow to the head of the pin, forcing it deep into the timber.
