← Day 32

the keeper's cottage · day 32 · morning

organizing the haul

The sun is higher now as you head back toward the cottage, the air still cool from the morning breeze.

Kevin's epoxy work on the dinghy centreboard case failed completely when he mixed the resin incorrectly in the gusty conditions, ruining the batch and forcing him to scrape it out. Jenny reached the northern cliffs and made detailed morphological sketches of the sea beet, noting its salt-adapted leaf structure and growth patterns.

The wind is picking up again.

Walk onto the porch and check the water level in the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry my hands are shaking, and if that boat doesn't come in two days, I'm going to start eating the notebook.

Northerly. Barometer's still rising. We've got a window.

Walk to the dinghy at the dock, pull the epoxy tub and fibreglass mat from the locker, and start mixing the first batch for the centreboard case while the humidity's low.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting northerly. Good for the centreboard case cure if it holds. Bad for the spruce spar if the gusts hit the wind generator wrong. Tank's full enough to last a month even if the supply boat misses its window.

I'm going to the cliffs. I need the sea beet.

Grab the notebook and the charcoal pencils, then head toward the northern path.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's working on the boat, I can finally leave without feeling like I'm abandoning the house.

Take the windbreak. And the radio if you're going past the shrine.

Keep mixing epoxy, lay the first layer of mat into the centreboard case, work it into the corners with the roller before the resin kicks.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been at that notebook all morning. The sea beet's at the tide pools, not the cliffs — she's heading north for the sketching spot above the pools. Wind'll be colder up there. She'll want the charcoal back before it blows away.

I'll take it.

Pick up the shortwave radio from the shelf and tuck it into my bag.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm worried about the wind, but I'm worried about the silence.

Top of the hour. Channel 16. Position report.

Finish wetting out the first layer of mat, brush resin up the vertical faces of the centreboard case, reach for the second cut of fibreglass.

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's at 60% battery. She'll forget to check it. If the weather turns she won't hear the securité calls. Should've reminded her to transmit position at the top of the hour. Too late now — she's gone.

🌿 Jenny03:07

Good luck with the epoxy.

Walk off the porch and start the climb toward the northern cliffs.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks to the radio like it's a person, not a lifeline.
