← Day 320

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday work and the first signs of strain

Kevin is at the dock, Jenny is at the garden

Kevin installed the steel doubler plate at the dock mooring ring using four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts, securing the ring firmly. He then checked the greenheart shim at the north piling toe and found it holding solid. Jenny mixed lime into the garden bed soil, spread the heirloom seeds from the tin to air-dry, and confirmed the barometer steady at 1027 hPa.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are at the dock, the tide continuing to fall. The oak wedges in the mooring ring mortise have split and are no longer holding, so the ring shifts under load. You begin reinforcing the setup with additional rope and bracing.

🔧 Kevin03:19

Kevin — fetch the steel doubler plate and four 150mm stainless through-bolts from the workshop; position the plate over the mooring ring mortise and begin driving the bolts through the dock timber into the plate, washers and nyloc nuts on each.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide’s still dropping. Need to lock that ring before the boat comes—rope and bracing won’t hold forever, but it’ll buy time. Get the doubler plate and bolts ready; oak’s no good here, but bronze and steel might.

🔧 Kevin03:23

Kevin — walk to the north piling toe; crouch and feel the greenheart shim for movement, tap it with the mallet to verify it's still driven home and bearing load.

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts are seated. Nylocs torqued to 35. Ring doesn't move when I lean on it. That'll hold the supply boat. Now the shim under the north piling — tide's low enough to check if it's still tight.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You are at the garden, the lime now mixed into the soil. You check the seed trays for signs of damping-off fungus, noting that some lettuce and pepper cells show fuzz at the soil line, while the tomato and basil remain healthy at true leaf.

🌿 Jenny03:21

Not today, not yet.

Wipe the condensation off the plastic cover with a dry cloth and move the healthy trays further under the way eaves.

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is rising; if I don't get these seedlings moved, they'll rot like my hopes in this dirt.

🌿 Jenny03:25

Jenny — wipe the damp soil from my hands and check the barometer one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting; I can feel the pressure in my joints before the clouds even break.
