Pre-storm tension

Kevin and Jenny stand by the raised garden wall as the air grows heavy and still. Kevin inspects the shade cloth over the tomato rows while Jenny checks the falling barometer on the porch.

Kevin reset the southeast garden tarp stake and began work on the southwest corner. Jenny retrieved the heirloom seed tin from the cottage and started planting, but her hands trembled as she applied lime to bed three.

Shade cloth stake's pulled on the southeast corner. Tarp corners need re-driving before the wind turns.

Walk to the southeast garden bed, pull the loose stake, and drive it back deep at a steeper angle with the mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
The air's gone dead. No breeze off the water, no bird calls. Barometer's at 1024 and holding but the weight of it says different — pressure dropping slow and stubborn, like a bruise forming. Shade cloth's flapping loose on the southeast corner where the stake pulled. Tarp corners I meant to check yesterday. Garden wall held the last tide but the mortar's still green in the top course. If the wind shifts north-northeast like the forecast fragment said, the fetch across the bay hits this wall broadside.

🌿 Jenny03:58

I'll check the mooring ring after I get the seeds from the tin.

Jenny wipes sweat from her brow and limps toward the cottage to retrieve the rusted seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping fast and my ankle is throbbing in time with the pulse; I need to plant before the boat comes.

Ring's holding. Doubler plate and four bolts. Check the tarp on the porch while you're up there — generator cover's loose on the north side.

Move to the next garden bed stake, test it with a boot, then drive it home properly.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the left side again. Has been for days. Won't say a word about it. The mooring ring's solid — I bolted it myself, four 150mm stainless through-bolts with a doubler plate, nylocs torqued to 35Nm. But the piling under it's rotted deeper than the shim reaches. She knows that. She's giving herself something to do so she doesn't have to stand here in the silence.

🌿 Jenny03:59

I'll check the tarp once the seeds are in.

Jenny enters the cottage, grabs the heavy tin from the shelf, and stares at the heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant today, the salt air will kill them anyway and I'll have nothing to show for it.

🔧 Kevin04:01

Kevin — finish the row of stakes, then walk to the porch to check the generator tarp myself.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling at the tin. The seeds are dry, viable, sorted — we did that work together three days ago. She doesn't need to stare at them. She's avoiding the porch, the tarp, the radio mast, the barometer. Avoiding the conversation we're not having. The letter in my pack burns against my ribs. Three lines. *Tom. Still here. Still trying. Kevin.* She put her name in the one she wrote. First time in months. I watched her fold it. Didn't ask to read it. Didn't need to.

🌿 Jenny04:02

I'm coming out.

Jenny clutches the rusted tin to her chest and limps back to the garden bed, opening the lid to reveal the damp heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle is so hot, but if I don't put these in the ground, I'm just stalling.

🔧 Kevin04:02

Southeast stake's reset. Moving to the southwest corner.

Walk to the southwest garden bed, test the stake, drive it deep.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin against her chest like a shield. The limp's worse today — shorter stride, right hip hitching. She's been on that ankle since the dock repair three weeks back, never let me wrap it proper. Seeds are fine. We aired them, sorted them, labeled them. She knows. I know. The wind's still not moving. Barometer's not moving. The silence between us is the only thing that's loud.

🌿 Jenny04:03

I'm starting now.

Jenny kneels in the dirt, wincing as her ankle shifts, and presses a small hole into the made bed with her finger.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is ready, but I am shaking. I need to be a botanist, not a caretaker of ghosts.

🔧 Kevin04:04

Bed three's pH is low. Needs lime before those go in. I'll fetch the bucket.

Walk to the garden shed, retrieve the crushed lime bucket, and return to bed three.

💭 peek at the thought
She's planting heirloom tomatoes in soil that hasn't been limed for this bed. pH log shows 5.5 untreated. They'll struggle. She knows that too. The wince was real — not performed. Ankle's swollen under the wrap. I should've made her sit while I did this. Should've done a lot of things different. The letter in my pack feels heavier than the tin in her hands.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:05

way up.

Jenny takes a handful of the lime and sprinkles it over the soil, her hands trembling slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is falling, and the air is heavy. If I don't plant now, the storm will take the whole garden anyway.
