The Pressure Before the Rain

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the overcast sky thickens over the water. The air is heavy with humidity, and the barometer continues its slow slide downward toward 1030 hPa.

Kevin replaced the worn bow line on the dinghy with the new length of three-strand rope to ensure security before the storm. Jenny checked the garden beds, noting the tomato and basil seedlings are healthy despite the pepper cells showing fungal fuzz.

🌿 Jenny08:45

The barometer is dropping fast. We need to check the tension on the garden tarp.

Jenny wipes the dirt from her palms onto her jeans and looks out at the darkening horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is bottom out; I hope that seed is deep enough to survive the runoff tonight, or I'm just tired of fighting the island.

Tarp corner's loose on the south edge. Dinghy lines could use a second look too. I'll do both.

walk to the garden to check and secure the loose tarp corner

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling faster than I'd like. Tarp's only got one loose corner but a squall'll find it. Need to secure that and check the dinghy lines while I'm at it.

🌿 Jenny08:47

Check the wayhy lines twice; the salt air is eating the fibers this year.

Jenny turns back to her notebook, tracing the sketch of the sea beet's morphology with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up before the boat, it'll tear that seed right out before it even takes root.

Spring and forward lines are last season's. I'll inspect the chafe points and replace if needed.

walk back to the dock and inspect all dinghy mooring lines for chafe and wear

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the salt rot. Stern line's new but the spring and forward lines are older. Should check chafe points at the cleats and the ring.

🌿 Jenny08:49

Make sure they are secure. I don't want the dinghy drifting out if the storm hits.

Jenny closes her notebook and starts walking toward the cottage to check the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the lines; the salt is a patient predator. I just hope the soil holds.

🔧 Kevin08:49

Checked. Forward spring's good. Stern line's new three-strand. Bow line's showing fuzz at the cleat — I'll swap it before dark.

untie the worn bow line from the dinghy cleat and replace it with a length of the new half-inch three-strand from the crate

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Dinghy's the only way off this rock if things go bad. Lines need to hold.

🌿 Jenny08:51

way up then. The light is going faster than the tide.

Jenny reaches the garden bed and kneels in the dirt, checking the spot where she planted the poppy.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing what he can see, while I'm trying to keep things alive that grow.

🔧 Kevin08:51

Bow line's fresh. Gonna fire the Yanmar at the dock, check vibration under load before full dark.

start the Yanmar engine on the dinghy at the dock and run it through the throttle range to check for vibration

💭 peek at the thought
Light's going fast. Bow line's swapped. Should run the engine quick at the dock to confirm the vibration's still only above half throttle — if the bracket's shifting under load, better know now.
