Midday at the dock and garden
Kevin works on the dock mooring ring reinforcement while Jenny monitors the garden beds and barometer.
Kevin spent the afternoon inspecting the dock reinforcements under the warm rain, checking for further rot in the hardware. Jenny attempted to manage the garden seedlings, but the humidity and rain made the work difficult and frustrating.
You stand on the dock planks, tide rising around your boots. The mooring ring shifts under your weight. The workshop's longer 150mm stainless through-bolts and the steel doubler plate sit in a bucket beside you, along with the heavy wrench and mallet. Rain drums on the water.
Kevin — pick up the heavy wrench and the bucket with the doubler plate and through-bolts, move to the mooring ring mortise, and start cleaning salt and debris from the bolt holes with a wire brush.

Kevin — position the steel doubler plate over the mooring ring mortise, align the four bolt holes, and drive the 150mm stainless through-bolts through from the seaward side. Thread washers and nyloc nuts on the landward side.

You stand at the garden's edge, the barometer in hand. The needle sits at 1037 hPa but the sky has darkened further west. The tarp holds. You check the seed trays — tomato and basil at true leaf, three pepper and four lettuce cells now showing damping-off. The poppy seed tin rests in your coat pocket.
Jenny — reach into my pocket for the seed tin, then walk to the highest point of the garden bed.

Come on, Jenny. Just one.
Open the rusted tin, take out one poppy seed, and dig a small hole in the earth with my finger.
