A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The humidity sits heavy over the cottage, the air smelling of salt and damp earth. The barometer continues its slow decline to 1035 hPa, signaling the inevitable arrival of the wet season rain. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the newly reinforced dock pilings while the heat beats down on the garden.

Kevin — walk into the kitchen and set the crowbar down by the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Back at the cottage. The morning's work sits in my hands — salt under the fingernails, the ghost of the crowbar's weight. Jenny's sketchbook is still open on the table where she left it. The barometer hasn't moved. Neither has the letter.

The wood is worse than it looks. It's soft through the core.

wipe the pencil graphite off my palm and look up from the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's exhausted from the dock. I'm exhausted from staring at the dirt.

The void under the sister?

cross to the table and look down at her sketch

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the dock plank I just pried. She's talking about the sister plank — the greenheart we bolted in. The one floating on a scoured void. She drew it. She knows.

🌿 Jenny10:59

Yeah. If I don't brace it now, the whole thing shifts when the next surge hits.

tap the pencil against the sketch of the joint where the wood meets the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the structure, and I'm looking at the rot.

🔧 Kevin11:00

Low tide's 0640 tomorrow. I'll cut wedges tonight.

pick up the pencil she left on the table and turn it over in my fingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The scour hole's been growing since the last front. The sister plank's only held by three bolts and hope. If the next surge catches it sideways, the whole dock frame twists. We have oak wedges left. Maybe some epoxy residue. Need to drive wedges at low tide tomorrow, backfill with stone and what's left of the tub.

🌿 Jenny11:01

I'll check the lime beds while you're working.

stand up and close the notebook with a heavy thud.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always ready to fix the world while I'm just documenting its decay.

🔧 Kevin11:02

Kevin — stand and walk to the workshop bench, pull out the scrap spruce for wedges

💭 peek at the thought
She's giving me space. Not pushing. Just doing what needs doing — like she always does when the silence gets too thick. The lime beds are at 6.8–7.0. Good. But the damping-off's still in the trays. Copper spray didn't take. Humidity's too high. We should've burned those trays yesterday.

🌿 Jenny11:03

Don't use the damp spruce, the grain is too weak.

walk out to the porch and look at the grey sky over the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already working, and I'm still afraid to open the tin.
