A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin checked the dinghy's chafe guard and found it wearing thin at the chock, then inspected the mooring ring and confirmed the oak wedges were holding it fast. Jenny examined the heirloom seeds and found them damp but viable with no mold, then sketched sea beet seed morphology in her notebook. A rat was caught in the pantry snap trap.

Radio check in ten. Then I'm walking the dock lines.

walk to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's got teeth now. Jenny's moving fast with the seeds — good. The tomato stakes I drove yesterday'll hold if the twine doesn't rot through. Need to check the dinghy lines at the dock before the surge hits the mooring ring. And the generator lashings.

Don't slip. The tide is coming in fast today.

Sit at the kitchen table and open the tin of heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the lines while I'm worried about the dirt.

🔧 Kevin12:55

The ring held last blow. The piling shim's solid. Just checking the chafe.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the water too. Good. The dock planks get slick with this swell direction.

🌿 Jenny12:55

Keep an eye on the sky; the barometer is dropping faster than I like.

Spread a handful of the heirloom seeds onto a dry paper towel to inspect for dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing is holding, even if the garden isn't ready.

🔧 Kevin12:57

I'll lash the tarp over the seed trays after the dock. Generator first.

reach the dock, grab the mooring line where it bites the ring, feel for play in the mortise with my weight on it

💭 peek at the thought
Sky's bruising west. She's right — pressure's falling like a stone. Those seeds look dry enough for now, but if this rain comes sideways through the cottage eaves…

🌿 Jenny12:57

Don't forget the salt on the generator housing. Everything gets in the gears.

Pick up a single seed and examine it for any sign of mold or rot.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator fails, the radio is the only thing I have left.

🔧 Kevin12:59

Got it. Wire brush and WD-40 on the flywheel teeth before I cinch the ratchet straps.

lean over the gunwale, run fingers along the chafe guard on the stern spring — new rope, good splice, but the guard's wearing thin at the chock

💭 peek at the thought
Salt in the generator housing. Right. The carburetor diaphragm lasted one storm last year before the corrosion seized it. Spare's installed but the housing itself pits fast.

🌿 Jenny12:59

Watch that chafe. The salt eats through faster than you think.

Sketch a quick morphology of the sea beet seed in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the mechanics, I'm staring at the life inside.
