Evening meal together

The smell of heated mackerel fills the kitchen as the wind picks up, rattling the shutters. They sit together at the table, discussing the need to batten everything down before the boat arrives.

The morning air is heavy and humid, the barometer pressure rising as the wet season heat settles. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the sandbars, providing a window for work before the supply boat arrives in four days.

🌿 Jenny13:25

The air is turning heavy, Kevin. We need to move the seed tin inside the kitchen and check the tarp one last time.

Closes the notebook and stands up to stretch her aching back.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again, and if I don't get these seeds into the tin now, the humidity will rot the whole batch.

🔧 Kevin13:25

Aye. Tin comes in. Tarp first — south corner's still loose from yesterday.

walk to the porch and check the garden tarp's south corner, batten it down with timber strips and weight it with the tool bag

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's coming in harder than the barometer said. She's right about the tin — condensation'll ruin what's left of the heirlooms if the shutters leak again.

🌿 Jenny13:27

I'll get the seeds off the table. They're still a bit too damp.

Picks up the rusted seed tin and the damp packets, moving them to the dry shelf above the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the tarp; the wind will catch that edge and rip the whole thing off the stakes.

🔧 Kevin13:27

Kevin — step out onto the porch and pull the spare tarp tight over the garden rows, tucking the leading edge under the ridge beam and battening it down with timber strips

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Stove heat'll finish drying them without cooking them. She's thinking ahead.

🌿 Jenny13:29

Be careful with the stakes, the wind is picking up fast.

Walks to the door and holds the frame, watching him work in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
If that corner holds, the salt spray won't reach the seedlings tonight.

🔧 Kevin13:29

Stakes are driven deep. Twine's holding.

finish battening the tarp's west edge, then walk back to the cottage and check the shutters on the kitchen window, latching them tight

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting west-northwest. Gusts hitting the porch wall different now — she feels it too.

🌿 Jenny13:31

Come inside, now. The tide is out but the wind is shifting.

Closes the door and bolts it, listening to the first low howl through the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. The air feels almost too heavy to breathe.

🔧 Kevin13:31

Right behind you.

step through the door, pull it shut, drop the bolt, and hang the storm lantern on its hook by the table

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's dropping faster than I liked. She hears it in the walls — knows what comes after the howl.
