Evening at the cottage

The sun is low and the tide is back in, covering the rock pools. You meet inside as the air temperature drops and the barometer continues to fall.

The tide is rising steadily against the shore, beginning to swallow the lower rocks of the tide pools. Inside the cottage, the air is thick with the scent of drying mint and the salty aroma of corned beef, while the barometer continues its drop, signaling a shift in the weather.

🌿 Jenny21:49

The tide is coming in fast. I didn't get to the seeds today.

Sit at the kitchen table, lift my swollen ankle onto the chair, and start sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves, and I'm so hungry I can barely focus on the sketches I didn't finish.

🔧 Kevin21:51

Seeds keep. Ankle doesn't. Keep it up.

set the cast iron skillet on the wood stove, slice corned beef fat into it, wait for the render

💭 peek at the thought
She's frustrated about the seeds. Ankle's worse — swelling up past the brace. Should've had her off it hours ago. Tide's pushing hard against the dock piles; heard the structure groan on the last big set. Barometer's still dropping. Night's going to be loud.

🌿 Jenny21:51

The soil is too dry, Kevin. It refuses to take them.

Press the pencil harder against the paper, shading the salt glands on the illustration until the lead snaps.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so practical it hurts; I want to explain that the soil is like concrete and my skin feels thin.

🔧 Kevin21:53

Run drip lines tomorrow. First light. Tank's got the head.

pull the spare pencil from the drawer beside the radio, set it on the table near her sketchbook without a word

💭 peek at the thought
Lead snapped. She's pressing hard — pain or frustration, maybe both. Soil's been bone-dry three weeks now. Tank's full but I haven't run the drip lines; been focused on the Yanmar. Should've done it days ago. She's right.

🌿 Jenny21:53

I'll check the pressure before the sun is up.

Reach for the broken pencil, rub the wood with my thumb, and stare at the tin of seeds on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a way line will fix the fear, but I'm just tired of the rot in everything here.

🔧 Kevin21:55

Limpets in the bucket by the door. Get them in the pan before the fat burns.

tip the bucket of fresh limpets into the hot skillet, listen to the sharp spit and sizzle, shake the pan so they settle shell-down

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning irrigation at dawn. Good. Means she's not stopping. The tin on the counter — heirloom packets, still damp from the crate. She wants them in ground before the next front. So do I. Skillet's smoking. Fat's ready.

🌿 Jenny21:55

I'm getting them.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight hits my ankle, and grab the bucket of limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the salt and fat makes my stomach growl, but I'm too weak to move.

🔧 Kevin21:57

Sit. I'll tend the pan.

nudge the chair back with my boot, hold the skillet handle steady with a folded cloth, shake it rhythmic so the limpets don't stick

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Won't let the ankle slow her. The wince was slight — she's hiding how bad it is. Antibiotics are down to two doses. If the infection tracks up the leg, we're in real trouble. Supper first. Then I'll check the wrap.
