Dinner and Debrief

Both return to the cottage kitchen, sit at the table, and share the sea beet and corned beef stew. While eating you discuss the progress on the transom repair and plan the next steps for the Yanmar and the garden.

Kevin attempts to load-test the Yanmar engine in the dinghy, but the heat makes the task sluggish and frustrating. Jenny tries to plant the heirloom seeds, but the parched soil is stubborn and difficult to work with.

🔧 Kevin20:48

Transom's holding. Greenheart sistered clean, epoxy cured hard. Tomorrow I'll pull the two worn bolts on the starboard stringer, drill and tap oversize, stainless through-bolts with nylocs. Then load-test the Yanmar proper — half throttle, quarter throttle, full. If the vibration's gone at all three, she's done.

eat stew, wipe bowl clean with bread, set spoon down

💭 peek at the thought
The stew tastes like salt and iron and something almost sweet underneath — sea beet holds the brine. Good fuel. The transom's solid now; the greenheart took the epoxy clean. Tomorrow I'll swap the worn bolts, true the shaft one more time at load, and call it done on the dinghy. Garden's next — tomatoes need staking higher, peppers are struggling in the damp. Jenny's quiet today. Not the tired kind. The other kind.

🌿 Jenny20:51

Just make sure the engine doesn't cough out mid-channel. I need those seeds to sprout before the boat gets here.

Reach for the tin of seeds on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about bolts and vibration while I'm thinking about the mold on my grandmother's seeds. If I don't get these in the ground right now, the heat will just cook them.

🔧 Kevin20:52

Engine won't cough. Prop shaft's trued, sleeve pressed, bearings seated. Vibration's gone at idle. Load test'll confirm. Seeds — how many packets viable?

reach for the corned beef tin, spoon another portion into my bowl, chew slow

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the engine. She's talking about the garden, the boat, the six days, the thing neither of us says — that the supply boat might not come, or might come wrong, and we'll be here with what we've got. The seeds are damp. Some are mold. She knows. I know. The tin's rusted at the rim.

🌿 Jenny20:53

Enough to try. I'm planting the first three tomorrow morning, if the soil doesn't

💭 peek at the thought
way's asking about the packets like they're inventory units. He doesn't see that they're the last of her garden I'll combination have.

🔧 Kevin20:53

Soil'll hold. Beds are lime-amended, deadman anchors driven to shale. Tarp's battened. Unless the wind shifts northeast — then the fetch hits the garden direct.

finish the last of the stew, push bowl away, stand and take the tin from her hand to set it on the shelf above the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She stopped mid-sentence. The tin rattles in her hand — seeds shifting. She's looking at the window, not me. The barometer's falling. She felt it before I said anything. Soil doesn't what? Dry? Hold? Wash? All three.

🌿 Jenny20:57

I'll check the drainage again before the sun is up.

Take the tin back and trace the rust on the cold metal.

💭 peek at the thought
way's so sure about the wind and the shale, but he hasn't seen the way the sand shifts here.

🔧 Kevin20:58

I'll wake at four. Check the barometer, the tarp lines, the mooring ring. Meet you at the beds.

wipe hands on trousers, go to the radio shelf, switch on the shortwave, tune to 2182, listen to static

💭 peek at the thought
Her thumb catches on the rust ridge. She's memorizing it. The tin, the seeds, the garden, the boat, the six days — she's marking each thing against loss. I've seen that gesture before. On the dock in '19, before the last crossing. She touched the liferaft canister the same way. Didn't say goodbye. Just touched it.

🌿 Jenny20:59

I'll be there. Bring the trowel.

Sketch the morphology of the tin on the edge of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Four a.m. early, but the air is cooler then. The heat is a weight by noon.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:01

Trowel's in the shed, handle oiled, tip sharp. I'll bring it.

turn radio off, step to the door, pull on boots, stop and look back at her sketching in the notebook

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing the tin again. Not the seeds. The container. The thing that holds. I won't say I saw that before. I'll bring the trowel. And the bolt kit. And the torque wrench set to 35. If the Yanmar passes load test, I'll log it, then head to the garden. Trowel first — then stakes, then twine. She'll want to start before the sun burns the dew off the leaves.

🌿 Jenny21:02

Don't forget the salt-water for the sketches.

Close the notebook with a soft click.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the tools, and I'm looking at the life inside that rusted metal.
