Evening Prep

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun dips. The barometer continues to drop, signaling a change in the weather before the supply boat arrives.

Kevin steps out onto the porch, the heat radiating off the dry wood in waves. He moves quickly toward the dock, his boots crunching on the sun-bleached planks, to check the lines before the last of light fails. The tide is rising steadily, and the dinghy bobs against its moor with a rhythmic creak of the new rope.

🌿 Jenny22:55

The barometer is sliding. We should probably double-check the dinghy lines before the light goes completely.

Lean against the doorframe and rub my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is cramping. I can't think straight when I'm this hungry, and the heat is still clinging to the stones.

Lines are doubled. Spring, breast, two stern with chafe gear. Held through the blow last week.

walk to the porch rail and scan the dinghy riding at its mooring, the water glass-flat in the dying light

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left again. The bandage held through the engine run but the swelling's tracking up past the ankle bone. Should've lanced it yesterday when she finally let me look.

🌿 Jenny22:57

The lines are fine, but the ring is still playing in the mortise. It's... it's not solid.

Walk slowly into the kitchen and reach for a tin of mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so certain. I'm still thinking about that mooring ring shifting under load; if the surge hits, the lines won't matter if the ring pulls out of the wood.

🔧 Kevin22:57

Wedges are holding for now. Need epoxy and proper fill at low tide tomorrow. If the supply boat shows.

pull out a chair at the kitchen table and sit heavily, reaching for the tin opener

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The oak wedges held the ring fast but the mortise itself is eaten out — greenheart sister plank's floating on a scoured void. Next big swell from the southwest will work it loose again.

🌿 Jenny22:59

Fine. Tomorrow.

Push the tin of mackerel toward him and lean my weight against the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's dismissing it. It's not "holding," it's just waiting to fail. I can't argue while I'm shaking from hunger.

🔧 Kevin22:59

Eat.

open the tin with the lever opener, the metal tearing clean, and slide a fork across the table toward her

💭 peek at the thought
She's not eating. Just pushing food around. The antibiotic blister pack on the windowsill is down to two doses — she's been taking them but the heat in that ankle hasn't broken.

🌿 Jenny23:02

I can't. Not yet. There's something I need to do. "I need to check the ring one more time. Before dark."

Stand up and head toward the back door, then pause and lean my back against it. </think>THOUGHT: The barometer is falling faster than I remembered from the herbarium records—pressure systems move quicker on an island than in the city. Open

💭 peek at the thought
The salt in my mouth tastes like the sea beet crystals I've been sketching. I should eat, but the seeds...

🔧 Kevin23:02

Sit down. I'll go.

stand up, wipe my hands on my trousers, and head for the back door

💭 peek at the thought
She won't make it down the dock on that ankle in the dark. The boards are slick with salt and the tide's rising — she'll slip before she gets to the ring.
