The Fever and the Heat
The sun begins to dip, but the temperature remains high. Jenny's shivering increases despite the dry heat.
Kevin turned on the shortwave radio and tuned to 8291 kHz, but the band carried only a distant news broadcast about an execution debate, no sign of Tom. He kept a cool cloth on Jenny's forehead as her fever climbed, the antibiotic course exhausted with the supply boat still nine days out.
Kevin... I'm freezing. Can you get me a blanket?
Pull the sheets tighter around my legs and shiver violently.

I'll get a cool cloth instead. Blankets trap heat. You need the fever down.
Walk to the kitchen, wet a clean cloth in the water bucket, wring it out, return to the bunk and lay it across her forehead and neck. Check the antibiotic blister pack on the windowsill — confirm both doses gone.

Is there any more? The pills... are there any left in the kit?
Close my eyes and lean into the cold cloth, breathing shallowly.

No. Two doses. Both gone. The boat's nine days if it shows.
Sit on the edge of the bunk, cloth in hand, rewet it from the bucket, lay it back across her forehead. Keep voice level. Reach for the radio handset on the shelf — thumb the power, dial to 8291, lift the mic.
