The Night of the Fever

The rain continues to hammer against the roof as the tide reaches its lowest point. The heat in the cottage is stifling.

The rain continues its steady rhythmic drumming on the cottage roof as the tide retreats, exposing the shoreline. Kevin returns from the dock with the greenheart offcuts, his movements heavy from the damp and the climb, while Jenny remains at the table, mapping the throbbing heat of her ankle in ink until the cold pack is pressed against her skin.

🔧 Kevin05:55

Going down to the dock. Check the ring at low tide. Back in twenty.

walk down to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's steady at 1031. Rain's not a front — just wet season. Tide's out. Time to check the mooring ring mortise one last time before the supply boat window. The oak wedges held last tide. Need to confirm they still hold at low water when the ring's unloaded.

🌿 Jenny05:56

Don't be too long.

Lean back against the stone wall and sketch the jagged, angry edge of the infection on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My skin feels too tight for my body, and the red is moving faster than I can draw it. Help.

🔧 Kevin05:57

Won't be.

reach the dock and crouch at the mooring ring, testing it with both hands — heave up, shove sideways, feel for any play in the mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the infection line like she's surveying a hull breach. Smart. Methodical. The fever's still there but she's not letting it take the helm. Good.

🌿 Jenny05:58

Jenny — artwork the pencil tighter until the lead snaps, focusing on the heat-pulsing map of the inflammation.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring pulls out, the boat is gone and I'm stuck here with the fever.

🔧 Kevin05:59

Ring holds. Wedges tight. Back now.

walk back up the path to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's solid. The four vertical-grain oak wedges are locked tight — no shift, no weep, no grit working loose. Mortise holds. Doubler plate and the four 150mm through-bolts with nyloc nuts at 35Nm doing their job. Greenheart sister plank's still floating on that scoured void but the ring itself isn't moving. Supply boat can tie up clean.

🌿 Jenny05:59

Good.

Drop the broken pencil and try to lift my ankle off the table, wincing at the throb.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat is still there, but my leg feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin06:01

Leave it up. I'll get the cold pack from the cool box.

step inside, open the cool box, retrieve the cold pack (warming, needs re-freezing), bring it to her and set it gentle against the calf above the wound

💭 peek at the thought
She's trying to elevate it but the swelling's past where gravity helps easy. The red line's mapped — she knows exactly how far it's crept. Antibiotics are holding but the leg needs rest she won't give it. Garden, seedlings, notebook — she'll push until she drops.
