The Storm Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as the wind begins to howl through the gaps in the shutters.

Kevin and Jenny meet at the old shrine as the sky thickens and the pressure drops. They check the barometer and prepare for the coming storm before the supply boat arrives in five days.

🔧 Kevin07:34

Jenny, we're getting hit. I'm going to check the dock lines and batten down the dinghy. Stay low and keep the radio dry.

walk to the dock, grab ratchet straps and spare rope, begin securing dinghy with double lines to mooring bitts and shore anchors.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's moving in fast. Barometer's falling—need to secure the dock and dinghy before dark. No time for letter now.

🌿 Jenny07:35

Be careful on the slick, the tide is coming in faster than the charts said.

Wrap the ankle in a clean cloth, hiss against the pain, and watch the own drop.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind takes the dinghy, I'm stranded here with a leg that's rotting and a tin of seeds that will go to mold.

🔧 Kevin07:36

I know. I'll keep low and use the pilings. Shout if the water hits the cottage step.

move to the windward side of the dock, test the mooring ring with my boot—it shifts. Wedge two oak shims into the mortise, then drive them home with the mallet as the tide lifts.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—tide's surging, and the dock ring's already loose. One wrong step and I'm in the drink. Gotta move smart, not fast.

🌿 Jenny07:37

The ring is holding for now, but watch the surge!

Grab the antiseptic from the kit, hands shaking as I prepare to treat the angry, red skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fighting the island, and the island is winning today.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Holding. I'm going to sister the two bad planks before dark—greenheart from the shed. If we lose this pier, we lose the supply boat.

jog back to the shed, grab two greenheart planks, the steel doubler plate, and the long stainless bolts. Run back to the dock as the rain sheets down.

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's seated—for now. But the planks are rotting underneath. If the crane hits them tomorrow, we lose the finger. Gotta act while I'm out here.

🌿 Jenny07:39

Jenny — press a cold cloth to the swelling, watching through the window as the world vanishes into the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
If the dock goes, the way goes, and I'm just a ghost on this ridge. ownSAY: Don't go out there alone! The surge is too high!

🔧 Kevin07:40

(shouting over wind) Planks are coming! Keep the radio on—if I don't answer in ten, assume I'm in the water and hit the beacon!

lay the greenheart planks alongside the rotted ones, bolt the doubler plate through both with the 150mm stainless bolts, washers, and nyloc nuts. Torque to 35nm as the tide surges beneath me.

💭 peek at the thought
She's blind in there, pain and worry closing in. I can't fix her ankle, but I can make sure the boat still comes. That's the only way back to her.

🌿 Jenny07:41

Kevin! The pressure is dropping! Come back!

Apply the antiseptic to the ankle, flinching as the liquid stings the heat of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
He's risking everything for a piece of wood while I'm sitting here watching my own skin fail.
