← Day 350

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

Midday work at dock and cottage

Kevin is at the dock checking the Yanmar vibration and prop shaft; Jenny is at the cottage tending seedlings and checking traps.

Kevin shimmed the mast bracket at the dock, reducing the misalignment. Jenny drained her ankle infection, debrided the wound, and boiled limpets for food.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand beside the dinghy at the dock, the tide low enough to see the prop shaft clearly. The Yanmar sits mounted, the bronze sleeve pressed on, prop nut torqued to 35Nm. You grip the prop and wiggle — no play. You spin it by hand — smooth, true. The vibration above half throttle isn't the shaft.

🔧 Kevin08:18

Kevin — climb out of the dinghy onto the dock, walk to the workshop, retrieve the feeler gauges and thin stainless shim stock.

💭 peek at the thought
Prop shaft spins true, no play. Vibration's not there. Mast bracket's skew is the only thing left — engine's solid on its mounts, but that bracket's pulling the alignment off under load. Need to shim it at the step.

🔧 Kevin08:22

Kevin — loosen the two forward bolts on the skewed mast bracket by half a turn each, just enough to create a gap at the heel where it meets the spruce step. Keep the aft bolts snug to hold position.

💭 peek at the thought
Shim stock ready. Need to loosen the mast bracket bolts just enough to slip shims under the low side without dropping the mast. Tide's still falling — good light, dry wood.

🔧 Kevin08:26

Kevin — cut a 20mm square of 0.5mm stainless shim, slide it into the gap under the port heel of the mast bracket, then snug the forward bolts back down. Check by eye: bracket now sits flush across the step.

💭 peek at the thought
Gap open at the heel. Need to measure how much shim to take the skew out — bracket sits proud on the port side by about half a millimetre when pressed down by hand. That’s the side to lift.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You stand at the kitchen table, the seed trays arrayed in the light from the window. Tomato and basil seedlings are strong at true leaf; three pepper and two lettuce cells show the white fuzz of damping-off at the soil line. You have the lime, the copper spray, the bags for burning. The rat trap in the pantry needs checking — you heard scratching behind the shelves last night.

🌿 Jenny08:21

Jenny — bag the three pepper and two lettuce seedlings with the white fuzz, then walk to the pantry to check the rat trap.

💭 peek at the thought
The damping-off is aggressive today. I can't let it jump to the basil. I need to be surgical about this.

🌿 Jenny08:25

Jenny — set up the sterilized needle and salt water bowl, then sit on the kitchen chair to drain the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle is still throbbing in time. I need to get that infection out before it goes deeper than the muscle.

🌿 Jenny08:29

Jenny — debride the wound with salt water, wrap it in fresh gauze, and put a pot of water on the stove to boil sea deets.

💭 peek at the thought
God, that was foul. But the pressure is gone. Now I just need to keep it clean and get some actual nutrients in me.
