The Humidity Weight

Jenny sits on the porch with her ankle propped up on a crate of seeds. Kevin is sorting the drying mint sprigs on the tray, watching the heavy grey clouds hold. The air is perfectly still and smells of coming rain.

The heavy, humid air clings to the cottage as dawn breaks over a grey, windless sky. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the barometer holds steady at 989 hPa, suggesting a lingering pressure front despite the lack of wind.

Mint's drying slow in this air. Might need the stove later.

pick up a sprig, test its brittleness between thumb and forefinger, set it back on the tray

💭 peek at the thought
The stillness before a front hits different out here — the birds go quiet, the water goes flat, and the barometer tells you what your gut already knows. She's watching me sort mint like it's normal work. Like we're not deciding whether to run the crossing today or wait for the supply boat that might not come.

🌿 Jenny15:34

Keep the stove low. I need the steam for the linens.

Reach for the bottle of high-proof alcohol, wincing as the movement sends a throb through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity rises, the mint will rot just like the lettuce did. I need that heat for the wash.

🔧 Kevin15:35

Steam'll take the last of the dry wood if we're not careful.

reach for the kettle, fill it from the tank tap, set it on the stove and bank the fire with two small splits

💭 peek at the thought
She's rationing the alcohol for the linens, not the ankle. Means she's thinking past today.

🌿 Jenny15:36

Let it burn. I need to debride this before the streaks move.

Unroll the bandage on my ankle, holding my breath as I check for new red lines.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is plenty, but the infection isn't. I can't afford the fever to climb.

🔧 Kevin15:36

Show me.

set the mint sprig down, wipe hands on thighs, crouch beside the crate to get light on her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
The red lines. She's tracking them like bearings on a chart. If they've moved past the knee, we're not talking about debriding anymore.

🌿 Jenny15:40

It's moving higher. Look at the heat near the bone.

Soak a clean cloth in alcohol, my hand shaking as I prepare to press the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at it like it's a mechanical failure. It's not an engine.
