The First Heavy Drops

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind picks up, rattling the spruce mast step on the dinghy.

The air is heavy and humid, the 30°C heat pressing against the cottage as the overcast sky thickens. The barometer is rising steadily at 989 hPa, signaling a shift in the wet season weather. The tide is high, waves lapping rhythmically against the reinforced dock pilings.

🌿 Jenny19:10

Kevin! Get the way over the seeds! Now!

Stands up clutching her ankle, limps toward the porch to secure the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is coming faster than the forecast; if those seeds get soaked, the year is ruined.

On it—hold the tin, I'll get the tarp and weight it down.

sprint to the porch, grab the spare tarp and the tool bag, then throw the tarp over the seed tin on the shelf and secure it with the bungee cords from the tool bag, weighting the corners with the wrench and file I had out earlier.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's coming hard and Jenny's moving fast on that ankle—she's scared the seeds'll wash out or rot. I need to get over there and help her secure the tin before the downpour gets worse.

🌿 Jenny19:14

Thank you.

Carefully slides the seed tin further back against the wall to keep it clear of any spray, then eases herself back into the chair.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast for once. I can't stand here like a statue while he does the heavy lifting.

You need water or the pills before I go check the dinghy?

glance at the canteen beside her, then step to the porch edge and scan the dinghy at the dock—mast step, stern line, bilge—assessing what needs tightening before the squall hits full force.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Tin's back against the wall, out of the spray line. She's off the ankle. Now the wind's hitting the porch hard—need to check the dinghy's mast step and the stern line before the gusts tear something loose.

🌿 Jenny19:20

Water's fine. Just... check the mast step. Please. If it shifts now, it'll snap.

Reaches for the canteen and takes a slow, cautious sip, eyes fixed on the dinghy's silhouette against the graying sky.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm shaking. I need to eat something or I'll crash, but the pills are more urgent.

🔧 Kevin19:20

Back in five. Holler if the ankle flares.

jog down the porch steps, cross the slick dock planks to the dinghy, crouch at the mast step and wrench-test the four 150mm stainless through-bolts, check the 0.5mm stainless shim under the heel, and verify the foreguy tension to the moorin

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the mast step's been dodgy since the reinforcement, and a hard gust could snap it clean. Need to get down there and check the through-bolts, the doubler plate, the heel shim. Rain's sheeting now, wind rising.

🌿 Jenny19:22

Jenny — limps slowly to the kitchen table, picks up the de-salted sea beet leaves, and begins to prep them for the skillet.

💭 peek at the thought
Five minutes is a long time when the wind is picking up like this. My ankle is pulsing, but the hunger is worse—it's a hollow, cold feeling.
