Night at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny reach the cottage porch in driving rain. The generator hums from the shed. A galvanized bucket catches drips under the leaking shutter. The shortwave radio sits clipped to the porch rail under its dry bag cover. Kevin still has the trust letter in his pocket. Jenny's ankle throbs with every heartbeat.

Kevin and Jenny shared coffee at the kitchen table while rain hammered the cottage. Jenny sorted through the heirloom seed packets with trembling hands, identifying viable tomatoes, peppers, and basil despite damp damage. Kevin left the trust letter unopened beside her, focusing instead on wedging the leaking shutter against the driving wind.

Get me to the chair. Quickly.

Lean heavily on Kevin and limp toward the kitchen door, dragging the injured ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
God, it's pulsing. I can feel the blood hammering against the inflammation. I need to get inside and get this boot off before I lose the will to move.

Steady. One step. Kitchen chair's clear.

Support her weight through the door, guide her to the kitchen chair, set the seed tin on the table, pull the trust letter from my pocket and lay it beside the tin

💭 peek at the thought
Her weight shifts — favoring the bad ankle hard, not just the slip on the ridge. The sweet smell's stronger in the rain. I should've made her stop at the spring and look. Now the kitchen chair, then the hard conversation.

🌿 Jenny21:03

Thank you. Just... thank you. "Thank you." My voice sounds weaker than I intended. "Just... just get me those seeds."

Lower myself carefully into the chair, wincing as pressure shifts on the ankle. Reach for the seed tin, fingers trembling slightly. Open it and immediately smell the earth and must of the packets.

💭 peek at the thought
He knows. He knows about the letter. The way he laid it there, careful as he always is with things that matter. I can't let this get in the way of what needs to happen now.

Tea first. Then the letter.

Fill the kettle from the tank, set it on the wood stove, pull two mugs down, drop in coffee and a spoon of sugar each, wait for the whistle

💭 peek at the thought
She's not looking at the letter. Hands shaking — cold or something else. The tin's organized, viable packets separated, moldy basil isolated. She knows every packet in there. I'll make tea, let her work, then we talk. All of it.

🌿 Jenny21:05

I can't wait for the tea. The rain is coming through.

Spread the seed packets out on the table, sorting them by type with shaking hands.

💭 peek at the thought
Tea won't fix an infection, and the pressure is dropping too fast. If I don't get these in the ground, the storm will rot them in the tin.

Shutter's leaking bad. I'll wedge it after the kettle whistles. Letter's there when you're ready.

Watch the kettle, listen for the boil, glance at the letter on the table, then at her hands sorting packets she already knows

💭 peek at the thought
Rain through the shutter means the porch bucket's not enough — water's tracking across the floor. She's sorting packets to keep her hands busy, not because they need it. The letter sits three inches from her elbow. Doxy count's twelve capsules left. She needs to know before she decides what to plant.

🌿 Jenny21:06

I need to see the labels. Clearly. "I need to see the labels. way. Before the light goes."

Pick up the packet of heirloom tomatoes, tracing the damp paper with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being patient because I'm being useless, but the ankle is a hot iron. I need to see the morphology of these seeds one last time.

🔧 Kevin21:06

Kettle.

Lift the kettle off the stove, pour two mugs, set one in front of her — steam rising, coffee dark — sit opposite with my own mug, wrap hands around the warmth, don't reach for the letter yet

💭 peek at the thought
Light's not going — storm lantern's lit, generator running. She's making reasons to stay in the packets. The tomato packet's viable, she knows it. Her thumb traces the same crease I saw her trace three months ago. Doxy count. The letter. The ankle. I said I'd tell her. Kettle's screaming.
