Evening at the standing stones
Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as light thins, the path muddy from yesterday's rain. They carry the storm lantern and a tin of mackerel. The standing stones loom ahead, carved initials weathered by salt, the 'E' stone and the softwood scrap with its carved message still in place among them.
Kevin and Jenny stood at the old shrine under the heavy overcast sky. They examined the freshly carved 'E' on the basalt stone, debating the origin of the mark while the tide held.
Look. They're still there.
Stop walking and point toward the 'E' stone and the spruce scrap.

Aye.
Stop beside her, lantern held low, and look at the stones — the 'E' stone, the scrap with its carved words, the ring of them wearing the weather down.

Someone spent a long time carving those. Not just a scratch. A proper effort to be remembered.
Reach out and lightly brush the surface of the 'E' stone with her fingertips.

Greenheart chisel, if they had one. Or bronze. Took hours per letter.
Set the lantern on a flat stone, freeing both hands. Step closer to the 'E' stone, fingers tracing a worn groove the way she did — feeling the depth, the angle of each cut.

Do you think they stayed? Or did they just leave a mark and go?
Lean slightly against the stone, shifting weight off the swollen ankle.
