The Afternoon Lull

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as the rain begins to taper off. The barometer shows a slight dip in pressure.

Kevin spends the afternoon working on the Yanmar injector pump, finally seating the component to prepare for installation. Jenny monitors her ankle for swelling and organizes the drying sea beet sketches as the tide begins to rise.

🔧 Kevin00:16

Chain's next. Then we see if she runs clean.

finish the last of the sea beet and mackerel, push the plate away, stand and stretch the left shoulder, walk to the workbench where the Yanmar spare block sits

💭 peek at the thought
The pump's seated. That's one thing done. Now the chain. She's watching me eat sea beet like it's normal. It's not normal. Her ankle's hot. I can feel it from here.

🌿 Jenny00:17

Check the radio again before you start the pump. I need to know if the trust is actually sending the boat.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, slowly unwrapping the bandage from her ankle to inspect the skin for new red lines.

💭 peek at the thought
If the red streaks reach the knee, I'm not making it to the boat. I can't let those seeds rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin00:18

Radio first. Then chain.

walk to the radio shelf, flip the power switch, turn the squelch up, dial to the trust's working frequency, key the mic

💭 peek at the thought
She wants the radio. She wants the boat. She wants anything but the helicopter coordinates written on the forms in the ditch bag. The red lines will be there. They always are.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:19

Tell them the pressure is dropping faster than the forecast. Don't just report the weather, tell them about the ankle.

Jenny presses a cold finger against the edge of the swelling, feeling for the heat of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the mechanics he can't see the skin changing on my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:21

Pressure's 976 and falling. Wind's southwest at twenty, gusting to thirty-five. Sea state three. No change since last report.

release the mic, wait for the crackle of Volmet to fade, turn the radio off, set it back on the shelf, pick up the injector pump timing chain from the bench and walk to the engine block where the spare sits bolted down

💭 peek at the thought
She wants them to hear the ankle. She wants them to see it's not just weather — it's her. She's asking me to beg without saying it. I can't do that. Not on air. Not with her listening.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny00:22

You didn't tell them about the infection. You didn't tell them anything real.

Jenny reaches for the tin of seeds on the table, her fingers tracing the cold metal edge, but not opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
He treats the radio like a tool, not a lifeline. I'm the one breaking down.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:22

They know the coordinates. They know the frequency. They know the window closes at midnight if the gale hits Force 9. That's what they need.

set the timing chain on the bench, pick up the socket set, begin unbolting the old pump from the spare block, hands moving steady despite the cold in the fingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. I didn't. The trust doesn't need to know about the ankle — they need to know the helicopter window. I already burned their letter. She knows that. She watched the ash curl up the chimney.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:23

The red is moving, Kevin. Look at it.

Jenny pulls her hand back from the tin, pointing to the swollen, angry skin just above the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The window is closing on my leg, not just the boat. If I go, the seeds stay in the dark to die.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:25

I see it.

drop the socket, wipe hands on the rag, walk to the table, pull the first aid kit from under the sink, open it and find the empty blister pack, set it down hard on the wood

💭 peek at the thought
The red's past the ankle now. Tracking up the calf. The doxycycline's done. The honey's done. She's burning up and I'm sitting here turning bolts on a pump that might not even run clean. The chain's the least of it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:25

Jenny — jenny shifts back in the chair, her breath hitching as she watches him find the empty plastic.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees it, but he doesn't *see* it. He sees a problem to be fixed. continuedSAY: We're out of the good antibiotics. You know that.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:26

Nothing left.

pick up the empty blister pack, turn it over in my hand like it might have changed since this morning, set it back in the kit, close the lid, walk to the porch door and pull on the oilskin jacket hanging there

💭 peek at the thought
Empty. The last one went down her throat at 0600. Twelve hours ago. She's been fighting this alone since then, watching the red climb, not saying a word. The kit's got saline. Gauze. Tape. Nothing that kills what's eating her leg.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:27

Jenny — jenny grips the tin of seeds on the table, her knuckles white against the metal, watching him open the door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out into the wind for a broken pump while I'm sitting here starting to rot. continuedSAY: Don't go to the dock yet. The barometer is crashing.
