Dawn radio call

First light bleeds through the overcast. The generator is already running. Kevin sits at the radio with the medevac forms, hand on the mic. Jenny stands in the doorway, weight on her good leg, the tin of mackerel on the table behind her. The channel is quiet. The tide is high.

Kevin wrote a letter to Tom and placed it in the radio box for the supply boat. He then attempted to finish the Yanmar timing and sea-trial the dinghy, but the engine vibration persisted above half throttle, likely due to the slightly misaligned mast bracket. Jenny sketched the redness margin on her ankle and monitored the infection; the swelling held but did not recede. She also worked on sea beet morphology sketches from the north ridge transect.

Don't call them yet, Kevin. Give me three days for the boat.

Walk to the table, pick up the pencil, and sketch the margin of the redness on my ankle in the notebook.

If he presses that button, the survey ends before I even get to the south ridge.

Three days. Dawn call each morning. If the streaks grow or the fever spikes, I key the mic whether you like it or not.

set the mic back in its cradle, pull the notebook toward me, and write the first dawn-check time beside the medevac form's header

💭 peek at the thought
She's bargaining with a fever I can feel radiating from six feet away. Three days is three tides, three chances for the barometer to drop, three nights I don't sleep. But she's not asking — she's telling, and her hand's steady on the pencil.

🌿 Jenny02:34

Just watch the fever. It stayed low yesterday.

Sit heavily in the chair, wincing as the ankle hits the wood, and stare at the tin of seeds on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already writing the report like I'm a dead specimen.

Yesterday's gone. Dawn check in six hours. I'll wake you.

turn from the radio, lift the mackerel tin, and set a spoon beside it on the table

💭 peek at the thought
Yesterday's low fever doesn't mean tomorrow's won't spike. She's watching the seed tin instead of her own leg, and that tells me everything about where her mind sits.
