The Rising Tide

The warm rain tapers to a steady drizzle as the tide climbs against the dock pilings. You meet in the kitchen to discuss the day ahead.

Kevin tested the mooring ring and found it solid despite the splitting oak wedges, then walked the dock checking pilings. Jenny boiled water for her ankle soak and sketched sea beet salt gland patterns in her notebook.

🌿 Jenny02:45

The tank is full, but I need to boil water for the ankle before the boat gets here.

Set the iron pot on the wood stove and open the notebook to the sea much sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again; I need to get that salt soak done or I won't be able to walk to the ridge.

🔧 Kevin02:45

I'll get the kettle going. You want me to check the ring while the tide's coming in?

Fill the kettle from the tank tap and set it on the stove beside her pot.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's steady enough to fill tanks but not so hard I can't work the dock. Tide's rising — good window to check the mooring ring under load. Need to boil water for her ankle first though. Priorities.

🌿 Jenny02:47

Check the bolts, but don't force them—the wood is soft from the rain.

Trace the outline of a salt gland cluster in the notebook with a pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ring is loose, the whole dock will shift when the supply boat tries to tie the dinghy.

🔧 Kevin02:47

Just looking. If the ring shifts I'll know before the boat arrives.

Pull on oilskin jacket and boots, step out onto the porch toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the soft wood. The greenheart shim and through-bolts are holding but the timber around them is saturated. Better to inspect under load than torque anything today. Tide'll tell the real story.

🌿 Jenny02:49

Be careful, the salt-rot gets deep this year.

Massage the swollen ankle ankle and wait for the water to boil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so careful with the wood while I'm the one rotting from the inside.

🔧 Kevin02:49

Aye.

Walk down the slick porch steps to the dock, testing each plank. Stop at the mooring ring. Crouch and examine the four through-bolts, the doubler plate, the oak wedges driven vertical-grain.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the rot. Knows it better than she lets on. The pilings have been weeping salt crystals for weeks — means the heartwood's gone in places. Tide'll be high enough in twenty minutes to load the ring proper. That's the test.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:52

The wedges are splitting—use the spare bolts from the cottage. Look at the crystal pattern here—the excretion points are off-center from the ridge specimens.

Fetch the longer stainless through-bolts from the tool chest. </think> Sketch the salt gland cluster in the notebook with a steady hand.

💭 peek at the thought
The oak wedges split when driven; maybe the steel ones would hold better. My hand is shaking too much to write properly.

🔧 Kevin02:53

Wedges splitting?

Grip the mooring ring with both hands and heave upward, testing for play. Watch the doubler plate and bolt heads for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already thought ahead — longer bolts in the tool chest. The wedges splitting means the mortise has widened more than I thought. Salt rot eats sideways. Need to see if the ring moves under this tide before I decide on new bolts. Her ankle's bad enough she shouldn't be carrying heavy things.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:53

Yes, the wood is too soft to hold the oak. Use the steel bolts from the tin.

Wait for the water to boil on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ring pulls out, the boat will take the whole dock down with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:54

Ring's solid. Bolts are carrying it. Wedges can split all they want.

Release the ring. Walk the dock length, testing each piling base with a boot heel. Probe the south piling where the greenheart shim sits.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring doesn't move. Not a millimetre. The four 150mm through-bolts with the doubler plate are holding — the load's on steel and greenheart, not the rotted oak. Wedges splitting doesn't matter if the bolts are carrying it. But she's right about the spare bolts. If a bolt fails, I'll need them ready. Tide's still rising. Best check the pilings too while I'm here.
