The Approaching Front

Heavy rain lashes the tin roof as the wind picks up from the west. Inside, Jenny sits at the small porch table wrapping her swollen ankle while Kevin monitors the barometer for a further drop in pressure.

The rain sets in hard from the west, signaling a significant storm before the supply boat arrives. Kevin and Jenny spend the morning securing the cottage and checking the garden lashings as the pressure continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny03:37

The pressure is falling fast, Kevin. Check the seals on the kitchen again.

Winces as she shifts her weight, gripping the pencil tighter against the paper of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that barometer drops again, the storm will hit harder than the forecast. I can't get to the garden tarp with this leg.

Checked 'em at first light. Top hinge on the seaward shutter's sprung — gap at the corner. Got tar and oakum in the locker. Do it before the tide turns.

Walk to the kitchen, pull the tar pot and oakum from the shelf above the stove, and climb onto the counter to work the seaward shutter hinge.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's been steady at 977 but she's reading something I'm not. Rain's horizontal now — west wind'll push tide higher than charted. Kitchen shutters leaked last storm; didn't reseal them proper.

🌿 Jenny03:39

Use more oakum than you think. The wind will find the smallest gap.

Watches him work from the table, her pencil hovering over a drawing of a sea much's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
If that shutter doesn't hold, the rain will ruin the notebook. I can't let the sketches get damp.

Hamm.

Pack the oakum thick into the hinge mortise, working it in with the putty knife until it mushrooms out both sides, then smear hot tar over the lot with the brush.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind at this angle drives rain sideways — finds every pinhole. Oakum's cheap, rot's not.

🌿 Jenny03:41

Make sure it's flush. The wind is going to pull it back if it's not tight.

Traces the edge of a sea beet sketch in the notebook, her pulse pulsing in time with the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's efficient with his hands. I wish I own be that steady without my own feeling like it's in a vice.

🔧 Kevin03:42

Got it.

Press the oakum flat with the knife blade, heating the tar so it soaks deep into the fibers and the wood grain, then wipe the excess clean with a rag wrapped round two fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
Flush is the word. Any proud fiber catches wind, wicks water. Tar's hot enough to penetrate — good.
