Evening Meal

The sun has dipped below the overcast horizon, leaving the cottage in a dim grey. The pressure is steady, but the air is growing still.

The evening air is heavy with heat, and the wind whistling through the palms creates a constant roar. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the pressure continues to drop, signaling a potential shift.

Nothing on 4075. Just the news loop and static.

Walk to the porch and stand in the doorway, looking at the grey water where the dinghy rides its mooring. The engine's warm from the test run. My hands find the rail, grip it.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence from VENTUROUS is louder than the static. Thirty minutes. She's waiting for an answer I haven't given her — can't give her. The dinghy's ready. The forms are signed. The seed tin's in the ditch bag. Everything but me.

Check the frequency again tomorrow. Maybe the signal bounced.

Lift a piece of hot sea beet to my mouth, wincing as the throbbing in my ankle flares.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in ten days, I'll have to cut the rot out myself.

Ate it slow. Chew. Swallow. "Tomorrow's the supply boat window. If they don't answer by 0800, I launch anyway."

Take the fork from her fingers, set it on the porch rail. Reach for the headlamp on the table, click it on — beam cuts the dark toward the dinghy's shape at the mooring. "You need the cold pack changed."

💭 peek at the thought
She's feeding me like I'm the one who's hurt. The sea beet's hot, salt and iron on my tongue. Her face is pale in the dim, sweat at her hairline, but her hand doesn't shake holding the fork. She's giving me an out — tomorrow, try again, wait — and I don't know if it's mercy or surrender.

🌿 Jenny08:41

Just give me the pack, Kevin. I'll handle the rest.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching the beam of light dance across the dust motes in the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too weak to even row that boat, let alone fight the current.

🔧 Kevin08:42

Pack's warming. Needs the cool box.

Turn from the doorway, cross the kitchen in two strides. Open the cool box lid — the pack's soft, thawed. Swap it for the spare from the bottom, still hard-frozen. Carry it back, set it on the table beside her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
She's dismissing me. Not the first time. The cold pack's warming on the shelf — useless in twenty minutes. Her ankle's hot to touch, the red lines marching past the knee. Cephalexin's gone. She thinks she can debride again herself if it comes to it. She thinks I'll let her.

🌿 Jenny08:43

Thanks.

Reach for the cold pack, pressing it against the swollen skin of my ankle with a sharp hiss through grit teeth.

💭 peek at the thought
He won't look at the streaks on my leg. He doesn't want to see the fever.

🔧 Kevin08:44

Hold it there. Twenty minutes.

Pull the chair from the table, sit facing her. Elbows on knees. Watch the pulse jump in her jaw. The radio behind me crackles — just atmospherics. My thumb finds the call button on the mic but doesn't press.

💭 peek at the thought
That hiss — I've heard it before. The first time she changed the dressing. The second. The third. She won't make a sound past it. Won't ask for the morphine tablets we're saving for the crossing. Her fingers are white-knuckled on the pack's edges. The headlamp throws her shadow huge against the wall, distorted.

🌿 Jenny08:45

Is the radio really dead today?

Close my eyes, focusing on the ice numbing the heat radiating from the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
If I press it now, I'm just screaming into the wind. The island isn't listening.
