The South-East Gale

A hard south-east wind whips salt spray off the reef, driving the heat into the garden. Jenny sits on the porch steps de-salting sea beet leaves while Kevin monitors the falling barometer as the pressure drops steadily.

The south-east wind carries salt spray from the reef, whipping against the keeper's cottage. Kevin works at the garden edge, driving heavy stakes deeper into the firmer soil to stop the shade cloth from lifting over the tomato rows. Jenny watches from the porch, rubbing her throbbing ankle, before crouching down to inspect the weave, checking if the tension is actually holding.

🔧 Kevin09:54

Tarp corners holding on the tomato rows?

walk to the garden to check the shade cloth fastenings and re-stake any lifted corners

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 1000 and still falling. Southeast wind means spray'll hit the garden beds before noon. Need to check the tarp fastenings and the dock ring before the tide turns — if the surge comes with this pressure drop, the mooring'll take a beating. Jenny's moving slow on the porch. Her ankle's wrapped tight but she's favoring it less today. Good. But the red streaks... if they haven't receded by the time I finish the dock, I'm starting the spare antibiotics and keying the radio. No more waiting.

Check the north side first, the wind is catching the grommets there.

Set the sea beet leaves down and stand slowly, rubbing the throbbing in my own ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts any further, the salt will scour the leaves right off the stems before I can even cook them.

🔧 Kevin09:56

Right. North side first.

walk to the north edge of the garden and inspect the shade cloth grommets and deadman anchors, re-staking and tightening as needed

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the garden better than I do. North side takes the brunt when the wind backs west — which it will, with this pressure drop. Her ankle's throbbing bad enough she's rubbing it standing there. Stubborn woman won't sit still. I'll check the north grommets and the deadman anchors while I'm at it. Then the dock.

🌿 Jenny09:57

Be careful with the stakes, the soil is still loose from yesterday.

Walk toward the garden to watch him, keeping one hand on the porch railing for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast for that ankle; he's going to tear the mesh again.

🔧 Kevin09:58

I'll drive them deep. You should sit.

inspect the north side shade cloth grommets, pull up any loose stakes, and drive them deeper into the firmer subsoil, re-tensioning the cloth as I go

💭 peek at the thought
Loose soil means the deadmen could pull out if a gust catches the cloth wrong. She's hovering — watching me work instead of sitting down. Her ankle can't take that weight for long. I'll make this quick and get her back on the porch.

🌿 Jenny09:58

I'm not sitting, I need to see if the tension is actually holding.

Walk to the edge of the garden bed and crouch down to inspect the weave of the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
He's stubborn as the tide, ignoring the swelling until it's too late.
