The First Squall

The first drops of rain hit the dust of the garden path as the wind picks up from the north, rattling the newly secured shade cloth.

The sky thickens to a bruised purple as the air grows heavy with humidity. A steady, warm rain begins to fall, darkening the dust on the garden path. The tide is receding, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the shore.

🔧 Kevin11:18

Rain's starting. Going to check the dock lines and the cottage. Back in ten.

walk to the dock, checking mooring lines and ring under load as the tide falls

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Shade cloth holding so far. Need to check the dock lines and the cottage shutters before the wind really gets teeth in it. Jenny's ankle — red streaks past the knee. She's burning up. Last of the antibiotics in her. If the supply boat doesn't show in seven days... don't think about that. Do the work in front of you.

🌿 Jenny11:18

Be careful with the wind!

Lean heavily on the garden wall and limp toward the cottage porch, clutching the arm for support.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the lines. He thinks the world is held together by knots and stainless steel. I'm held together by a few milligrams of Doxycycline and a prayer.

🔧 Kevin11:20

Shade cloth's tied off proper. Won't go nowhere. Holler if you need anything.

continue to the dock, inspect the mooring ring reinforcement and stern spring lines as the wind freshens

💭 peek at the thought
She's worse than she's letting on. Walking like that — weight off the bad leg, arm braced. Fever's climbing. But she'd bite my head off if I hovered. Check the dock, check the cottage, get back to her.

🌿 Jenny11:21

Just go.

Enter the cottage, close the door against the wind, and sit at the kitchen table to look at the seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
"Holler if you need anything." As if I could hear over this wind. My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain.

🔧 Kevin11:22

Kevin — reach the dock, grab the dinghy's forward spring and stern lines, check chafe points and tension, then inspect the mooring ring mortise for any shift under the new load

💭 peek at the thought
Door's shut. Good. She's warm inside. Dock first. Ring's holding last I checked — oak wedges, steel plate, four through-bolts — but this wind'll test it proper. Tide's falling, swell building. If the dinghy's lines chafe through...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:23

Jenny — reach for the seed tin, fingers hovering over the cold metal, but not opening it yet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there fighting the salt while I'm in here fighting my own blood. The red line is moving. I can feel the heat.

🔧 Kevin11:24

Kevin — walk back up the path to the cottage, pause at the garden to check shade cloth corners one more time, then enter the cottage

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
Lines are singing in the gusts. Forward spring's good — new half-inch three-strand, long splice held. Stern line reinforced with sail twine serving. Chafe guards intact. Mooring ring hasn't shifted; oak wedges bitten deep, doubler plate distributing the load. But the north piling... greenheart shim's holding, but the scour hole at its toe has deepened since last week. Another big tide series and it'll need more than a shim. Dinghy's riding high, engine mount bolts solid, mast bracket alignment still slightly off but bolted through. She'll take the chop.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:25

You're soaking wet.

pull the seed tin from the shelf and set it on the table, staring at the rust.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting heavier. If the boat doesn't come, these seeds stay in the tin. I need to check the leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:26

Dock's holding. Ring solid. North piling scour's worse. Needs another shim at low tide tomorrow if the weather breaks.

peel off the wet oilskin jacket, hang it on the peg by the door, move to the table opposite her without touching the tin

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down proper now. Horizontal. Soaked through in the two minutes from the dock. She's staring at that tin like it holds answers. Forty-two varieties she counted. Grandmother's tomato. Pepper. The lot. She wants me to plant them. Promised her I would. Haven't. The garden's half weeds still. Shade cloth's up but the beds behind it...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:26

The weather isn't breaking anything. Look at the sky.

pull back the fabric of the sock, exposing the angry, swollen skin of the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about shims and scour while I'm watching a red line climb up my leg.
