Approaching Storm Front

The heavy air begins to move as the barometer continues to drop; the pressure change is accelerating rapidly.

The air is thick and humid as the grey sky deepens into a bruised purple. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the newly reinforced dock pilings, while a sudden gust of wind whips the shade cloth over the garden. A large branch from a fallen tree has come across the path to the north, partially blocking the main route to the spring.

🔧 Kevin11:08

Kevin — walk to the dock, check the dinghy lines and seaward bolts, secure everything for heavy weather.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropping fast now. Storm's coming in harder than I thought. Need to secure the dinghy and check the seaward bolts before dark — my own rule.

🌿 Jenny11:09

Kevin, check the seaward bolts again—the wind is turning south.

lean heavily against the kitchen counter to peel the limet meat from the shell, wincing as the movement sends a sharp spike through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that storm hits before the boat, I won't be able to get to the radio.

On it.

Walk down to the dock, inspect the seaward bolts on the greenheart sister plank, check for movement under the rising tide.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. South wind drives swell straight into the dock face. Bolts took the load last time but the greenheart sister's still floating on that scoured void. Need to check them now, before the tide pushes the swell home.

🌿 Jenny11:10

Jenny — limp slowly toward the porch, carrying the bowl of shelled limpets, and stop to look at the horizon where the grey is turning a bruised purple.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the dock. The dock is just wood and bolts; my leg is the one actually rotting.

🔧 Kevin11:12

Kevin — check the four seaward bolts on the greenheart sister — wrench on each nut, feel for play, watch the timber for movement as a swell hits.

💭 peek at the thought
That purple horizon means business. She's moving slow — ankle's bad, fever's back. Can't leave her alone long. Check bolts fast, get back up to the cottage.

🌿 Jenny11:12

The sky is bruising, Kevin! Hurry up!

set the bowl of limpets on the porch table and hobble toward the water tank, dragging my infected ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
That purple hue... the air feels like it's being sucked out of the island. I need to get the tank checked before the rain starts.
