The Calm Before the Front

Kevin and Jenny stand by the dock as the engine hums against the muffs. The air is heavy and still, with the thickening clouds beginning to blot out the sun while the high tide laps against the pilings.

Kevin tested the dinghy engine under load at the dock to confirm the new mount was secure. Jenny headed toward the north ridge to survey the native flora but struggled with the footing and the thickening cloud cover.

🌿 Jenny09:51

It sounds steady. You satisfied with the mount?

Shift weight and look up at the darkening clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine sounds clean, but the sky looks like it's holding its breath. I need to get to the ridge before the rain starts.

🔧 Kevin09:51

Mount's solid. Oil pressure forty, tell-tale clean. She'll plane with two and stores.

Kill the engine, pull the kill cord, and wipe my hands on a rag while watching the cloud line to the southwest.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty PSI oil pressure, tell-tale strong, no vibration in the transom brackets. The mount holds. But the sky's wrong for September — too heavy, too still. Barometer's been steady at 1013 but that cloud deck's moving faster than the forecast said.

🌿 Jenny09:52

Good. Then leave it be for today. I'm heading to the north ridge before the ceiling drops any further.

Turn away from the dock and start walking toward the ridge trail.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about planning and stores, but he's looking at the weather. He knows the window is closing.

🔧 Kevin09:52

Take the radio. Channel sixteen.

Watch her start up the trail, then turn back to the dinghy — check the transom paint blisters where the mount bolts bite, mental list forming: sail repair, transom paint, VHF whip. Three jobs.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the sky same as me. North ridge gives her the horizon — she'll see what's building before the radio picks it up. Should've checked the shortwave at 0600 proper, not just Tom's frequency. Weather fax might've had something.

🌿 Jenny09:55

I'll keep it on.

Stop, walk back to the cottage porch to grab the handheld radio, then set off toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already back in his head, counting bolts and paint blisters. He doesn't even look at me.

🔧 Kevin09:55

Kevin — untie the dinghy from the dock, pull her up the beach past the high tide line, and haul the sail bag from the locker — spread the starboard leech flat on the sand to assess the damage.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She took it. The ridge trail's exposed — if the squall hits hard she'll have warning. Meantime the air's dead calm and the sail cloth won't fight me. Starboard leech first. Three panels, maybe four hours work if the humidity doesn't rot the twine before I finish.

🌿 Jenny09:56

Jenny — walk steadily up the trail toward the north ridge, notebook and pencils tucked into my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over the sail now. He'd rather fix a stitch than have a conversation.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:57

Kevin — thread the sail needle with waxed twine, anchor the first panel with a sailmaker's palm, and start the herringbone stitch along the leech rope — working from the foot upward, pulling each stitch tight before the air turns.

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
Sail cloth's sound — tear's clean, just the stitching gone. Three panels, eighteen inches each. Humidity's the enemy; twine'll swell and knot if I don't work quick. Good day for it, if the weather holds.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:59

Jenny — climb higher toward the ridge, stopping occasionally to note the change in soil moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is getting cooler. I can smell the damp earth waking up. I hope the heath is still visible under the cloud cover.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin09:59

Kevin — finish the first panel, knot off clean, move to the second — drive the needle through the leech rope and body cloth, herringbone stitch for stitch, watching the horizon over my shoulder.

flagged: repeated_opener

💭 peek at the thought
First panel halfway. Twine's holding, fingers remembering the rhythm. Cloud bank's dropped lower since dawn — purple-grey underbelly now, not white. Wind'll shift northeast when it breaks. Two hours before the rain hits, maybe three. Need the second panel done by then.
