evening huddle

The rain has slowed to a light drizzle as Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen to assess the water levels for the night.

Kevin cleans the water catchment filter as the heavy rain hammers the roof, keeping the tank full. Jenny stays inside to manage her throbbing ankle, resting while the wind picks up against the cottage cottage walls.

🔧 Kevin17:48

Four hundred litres. Full. Mesh held today but it's loading up with silt. Tomorrow morning I'll pull it and backflush proper.

Check the tank gauge, then set the bucket aside and wipe hands on trousers.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full. Filter mesh is the weak link now — another day like today and it'll clog solid. Need to pull it at first light and backflush proper, not just swirl in a bucket.

🌿 Jenny17:49

Don't wait until morning. The pressure is already dropping.

Pick up the pot of boiling limpets from the stove and wince as the throbbing in my ankle flares.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't do it now, the silt will choke the whole system and I'll be drinking mud.

🔧 Kevin17:50

Take the pot. I'll do the filter now.

Step past her to the stove, take the pot handle with a dry cloth, and set it on the trivet. Then grab the wrench and head for the back wall where the filter housing meets the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's been falling all afternoon. If the mesh clogs overnight we lose the catchment when we need it most. Ankle's slowing her down — she shouldn't be carrying that pot.

🌿 Jenny17:50

Thank you.

Sit at the kitchen table, lift my ankle onto the chair, and start peeling the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
He's stubborn, but he's moving. I can't stand the heat anymore anyway.

🔧 Kevin17:52

Eat while it's hot. I'll have the mesh clear before the next band hits.

Set the wrench on the housing nut, spray penetrating oil on the threads, let it soak while fetching the stiff brush and a clean bucket from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's off her feet. Filter housing bolts are corroded — last time they fought me. Penetrating oil helped but the silt's finer now, packs tighter. Need the bucket, the brush, and patience.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:53

Be careful with those threads.

Take a small bite of a limpet and chew slowly, watching the rain lashes the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the oil is making my stomach turn, but I'm so hungry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:54

Brass on bronze. I know. Taking it slow.

Let the oil work a minute longer, then apply steady pressure on the wrench — feel for the break point, don't jerk it.

💭 peek at the thought
Threads are brass, housing's bronze — dissimilar metals, twenty years of salt. They'll gall if I rush. She knows. She's watched me fight this housing before.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:54

Use the cloth for more grip.

Rub my ankle to try and soothe the throbbing under the brace.

💭 peek at the thought
If he strips that nut, we're stuck with dirty water until the boat.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:56

Nut's too deep for cloth. Got the right socket in the box.

Walk to the tool shelf, retrieve the 19mm deep socket and ratchet, return to the housing, seat it square on the nut, and turn with slow even pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
Cloth won't help the wrench bite — nut's recessed. But she's trying to help. Ankle's swollen hot under the brace; she's been on it all day in the garden. Should've made her sit sooner.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:57

way's going.

Lean forward, resting my weight on my elbows, watching the nut turn.

💭 peek at the thought
It's finally moving. If the salt hasn't fused it

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:58

Half turn. Still moving.

Continue turning the ratchet in smooth increments, pausing each quarter-turn to let the threads settle, watching for any sign of galling or sudden resistance.

💭 peek at the thought
Nut's moving — half turn now. Oil's working. Keep it slow, feel for the thread binding. If it seizes I'll back off, re-oil, try again. One revolution at a time.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny17:59

Jenny — wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of a hand, keeping my eyes on the nut.

💭 peek at the thought
almost there. If I can get this housing off, I can finally clean the mesh. continuedSAY: almost there.
