The Western Squall

Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch overhang as heavy rain lurches in from the west. Jenny keeps her ankle propped on a crate while Kevin monitors the barometer and the garden lashings.

Kevin worked in the driving rain to weigh down the garden shade cloth with heavy stones to protect the tomato rows. Jenny stayed inside to monitor the barometer and prepare the replacement for the water filter mesh as the pressure continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny18:10

The barometer is dropping, Kevin. Check the tension on the garden stakes again, please.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight and watches the water pool against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to drown the area seedlings if we don't get the tarp secured, but I can't even stand without shaking.

🔧 Kevin18:10

Right. Be back in a minute.

walk to the garden to check stake tension and shade cloth lashings

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer was 983 and rising at dawn. Now she says it's dropping. Need to check it myself — pressure shifts fast here, and the garden shade cloth will catch wind like a sail if the stakes give.

🌿 Jenny18:12

Watch the water tank too—it's rocking in the wind.

Jenny reaches for her notebook and begins sketching the way the rain sheets off the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If that mesh doesn't hold the runoff, the pepper seedlings will be buried in mud before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin18:16

Kevin — check the garden stake tension and shade cloth lashings, then inspect the water tank brackets on the return

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's 400 litres full — heavy enough to hold, but if the footing's shifted on that back wall it could lever loose. Check the stakes first, then the tank brackets on the way back.

🌿 Jenny18:17

Are the stakes holding? The wind is catching the shade cloth.

Jenny bites her lip, watching him move through the deluge, her ankle throbbing in time with the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the brackets give, the whole tank tips and we're out of water in a week.

🔧 Kevin18:18

Holding for now. Cloth's catching bad though — need to re-batten the leeward edge.

pull the leeward shade cloth edge tight and batten it down with another timber strip, checking each stake as I go

💭 peek at the thought
Four oak stakes I drove at the corners, timber strips battening the edges. Wind's gusting now — cloth's billowing hard. If a stake pulls, the whole lot goes.

🌿 Jenny18:18

Be careful with the stakes, the soil is turning to soup.

Jenny adjusts the salt poultice on her ankle, her breath catching as a gust of wind shakes the cottage roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that flap again, it'll be ripped in minutes.

🔧 Kevin18:20

Won't drive them deeper. Going to weight the edges instead — stones from the wall.

gather flat stones from the garden wall and lay them along the shade cloth perimeter, then secure the leeward batten strip with screws into the existing stakes

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — ground's saturated. Driving stakes deeper just churns the muck. Better to angle the batten strips so they spread the load across more turf, and weight the cloth edges with stones from the wall.

🌿 Jenny18:20

The barometer is still dropping. If it gets worse, the filter mesh will choke anyway.

Jenny pulls her leg up toward her chest, watching the water pool against the porch steps.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones might slide if the mud isn't thick enough, but it's better than losing the whole.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:22

Mesh'll hold a bit longer. But I'll cut the new one from the spare roll once the stakes are done.

finish securing the shade cloth with stones, then head back to the cottage to check the barometer and start cutting replacement filter mesh

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the pressure same as me. Filter mesh is already clogged with silt — heavy rain'll load it faster. The muslin-and-charcoal pre-filter bought time, but the main mesh is shot. Need to splice new mesh from the spare shade cloth roll before the tank overflows and wastes water we can't afford to lose.
