The Height of the Storm

The rain has turned into a relentless deluge, and the wind howls through the radio mast. The cottage shudders as the gusts intensify.

The heavy, humid air signals an approaching storm as the atmospheric pressure continues its steady drop. Kevin spends the evening securing the cottage and checking the gear, while Jenny focuses on the drying heirloom seeds in the damp heat.

Generator's steady. Tank's near full. You want the headlamp or the storm lantern on the table?

Walk to the kitchen shelf, check the barometer reading again, then set the storm lantern on the table and trim the wick.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's at 984 and holding — but the wind's backing further southwest. This isn't the peak yet. Generator's running clean after the needle fix, but if the intake screen cements again with this runoff, we lose water pressure. Need to check the tank level and the overflow route before the ground saturates.

The lantern. Please. I need to finish this sketch.

pull the notebook closer to the warmth of the stove and shift my weight away from my way ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The lantern is better; I need to see the fine veins on these beet bracts before my eyes get too tired.

Kevin — light the storm lantern, set it on the table beside her notebook, adjust the wick until the flame burns clean and still. Pull out the chair opposite and sit, back to the stove, listening to the wind load on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through the pain. Ankle's better but not right. She'll work until her hands shake. The lantern throws steadier light than the headlamp anyway — less harsh on the eyes for detail work.

🌿 Jenny23:47

The pressure is dropping faster than I expected today.

pick up the charcoal pencil and trace the edge of the sea beet leaf in the margins.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet tonight, which is good for the focus, but the wind is making the house groan.

🔧 Kevin23:48

How fast?

Reach for the notebook on the shelf, flip to the weather log page, hold the pencil ready.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been watching the barometer all day. If she says it's dropping faster, it is. 984 to... what, 978? 975? The wind's already hitting the shutters hard. Spring tide in two days. If this low deepens, the surge could top the garden wall.

🌿 Jenny23:49

Jenny — write the current reading in the log and look out the dark window at the rain hitting the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
If it drops another point, the supply boat won't make it in this weather. ownSAY: About three millibars in the last hour. It's turning.

🔧 Kevin23:51

I'll check the garden tarp lashings again. And the tank overflow.

Stand, pull the oilskin from the hook by the door, shrug into it.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't guess. She'll wait for the needle to settle. The wind's driving rain horizontal — I can hear it scouring the porch boards. Garden wall's only two courses high on the seaward side. If the surge comes with this wind direction, it'll push straight up the inlet.

🌿 Jenny23:51

Be careful. The porch is slick with moss.

stop sketching and watch him close the door, the heavy thumping against the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there in this gust, the wind will take him right off his feet.
