Morning Rain and Seed Drying
Jenny spreads the damp heirloom seed packets across paper on the kitchen table to catch the rising heat. Kevin sits at the edge, checking the tension on the spruce spar while the warm rain drums against the roof.
The warm rain continues in rhythmic pulses, soaking the earth and sharpening the scent of damp cedar and salt. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the base of the dock. Inside the cottage, the air is humid with the smell of drying heirloom seeds and the metallic tang of the Yanmar engine.

Wait until the rain stops. I need to check the sea much leaves first anyway.

Rain's not stopping till the wind backs. Leaves'll keep.
set the spar aside on the porch rail and pull the notebook closer to scan the sea beet sketches

The leaves are fine, but the seeds won't survive if they stay damp long enough to rot.
Jenny traces the salt-gland morphology of the sea beet in her sketch, her pencil moving with impatient precision.
