Weathering out the storm

The rain howls through the night as you two huddle inside, waiting for the barometer to stop falling.

The rain continues in a steady, warm drizzle, soaking the stone of the old shrine. The wind has shifted to the north, causing the garden tarp to lash against the cottage wall. The barometric pressure continues its steady drop to 980 hPa, signaling that a significant storm front will arrive within the next twenty-four hours.

🔧 Kevin00:31

Kevin — check the generator oil level and tighten the garden tarp lines at the corners

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted west-northwest. Means the low's tracking south of us — bad for the supply boat, means another week at least. Barometer's still dropping. 978 now. Jenny's asleep in the chair, ankle propped. Should check the generator oil and the tarp lines before I turn in. And the radio. 0200's in four hours.

Check the knots again, Kevin. The wind is picking up from the north now.

Sketch the way the water is pooling in the tarp folds in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp catches the wind, the heirloom seeds will be lost to rot and I won't have another chance.

🔧 Kevin00:32

On it.

pull on boots and rain gear, step out onto the porch to check the tarp corner knots and tension

💭 peek at the thought
North wind now. That's different — the low's jogging. Could mean it's filling, could mean it's wrapping around us. Either way the tarp's taking load it wasn't cut for. She's right to wake me.

Watch your step by the ridge, the ground is—

Move the seed tin closer to the stove heat, the air is too heavy.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to slip on those rocks, they're slicker than glass.

🔧 Kevin00:34

I'll stay off the ridge. Just the porch corners.

check the two tarp corners on the porch side first, leaning out from the doorframe — test each knot with a pull, cinch the timber batten down harder on the ridge beam where the tarp's billowing

💭 peek at the thought
Ground's slick by the ridge. Clay goes to grease when it's this wet. She's tracking the wind shift in her head — north now, was west-northwest an hour ago. Low's stalling or looping. Means more rain, longer blow. Generator's running steady though. Heard it cough once but picked back up.

🌿 Jenny00:35

Use the extra weight if you have to, just keep it flat.

Stand in the doorway to hold the light, watching the rain lashes the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is catching the underside like a sail; one more gust and it'll rip the grom.

🔧 Kevin00:36

Tool bag on the leeward batten. Hold the light steady.

grab the tool bag, lash it to the leeward end of the ridge batten with a length of sail twine to weight the tarp flat, then check the windward corner knot again

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding the lantern so I can see the knots. Wind's steady north now, 30 knots sustained, gusts hitting the porch roof. Tarp's drumming. The extra timber strips are in the shed but the tool bag's right here — heavy enough to weight the leeward corner if I lash it to the batten end.

🌿 Jenny00:37

It's holding for now, but watch the tension.

Angle the light to catch the beam where his hands are working.

💭 peek at the thought
If that twine snaps, the whole thing comes down in the mud.
