The eve of the storm

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof. The atmosphere is tense, and the falling barometer confirms their fears that the dry window is closing.

The air is heavy and still as the atmospheric pressure drops, signaling an approaching storm. Kevin and Jenny prepare the cottage and the dinghy for the coming winds while the tide continues to recede.

🔧 Kevin01:24

Storm's tracking faster than the barometer said. Dinghy's tied but the engine cover's off. Going to button her up before the swell hits the dock hard.

walk to the porch and pull on oilskin jacket

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's here. Barometer's dropped another millibar since I checked the dinghy. Need to get the engine cover on and the bilge pump tested before the swell makes the dock dangerous. She's watching me — knows I'm avoiding the radio call.

🌿 Jenny01:25

Take the cover first. The salt will eat the carbs if the wind picks up.

Pull the heirloom seed tin away from the edge and place it on the highest shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the engine shorts out in this salt, we're stuck here with no boat and a rotting ankle.

🔧 Kevin01:26

Cover first. Then bilge pump.

grab the canvas engine cover from the hook by the door and head down the porch steps to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt spray gets in the carbs and we're dead in the water. Good instinct — she's thinking ahead.

🌿 Jenny01:27

Watch the lines! The tide is coming in higher than usual!

Grab the notebook and tuck it under the bed to save the sketches from the humidity.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting too fast; if he doesn't secure that cover, the spray will ruin it.

🔧 Kevin01:28

Got it. Giving the bow line two more feet.

step onto the slick dock boards, crouch at the bow cleat, and feed slack into the line while watching the water climb the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing higher than the charts. Spring tide with this pressure drop — she's seen it too. Lines need slack for the surge or they'll snap the cleats.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:29

Don't let it pull the cleats! The swell is already building!

Wrap the ankle tighter with the clean cloth and brace against the throbbing pain.

💭 peek at the thought
The surge is going to take the dinghy if he doesn't catch that slack right now.

🔧 Kevin01:31

Cleats are bolted. Lines have give. Checking the stern spring now.

move aft along the dock, one hand on the cottage wall for balance, and inspect the stern spring line tension at the transom cleat

💭 peek at the thought
She's scared. Can hear it in her voice. Cleats are through-bolted into greenheart — they'll hold if the lines have give. Need to check the stern spring too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:31

Watch the spring! The water is rising too fast!

Move the seed tin closer to the stove to keep it dry.

💭 peek at the thought
If that spring snaps, the whole wayhy swings into the rocks and we're stranded.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:32

Easing the spring. Watch your fingers.

grab the stern spring line at the transom cleat, uncleat it fast, feed two feet of slack through the chock, and cleat it off again with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Water's climbing the pilings fast. Spring line's tight — no stretch left. If the surge hits before I ease it, the transom cleat rips out. Need to feed slack now, hands cold and wet.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:33

It's tight. Get inside before the rain really starts.

Retreat to the kitchen and close the heavy door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in with a vengeance, and my ankle is screaming every pulse of the wave.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:34

Cover first. Then inside.

climb into the dinghy from the dock, pull the canvas cover over the Yanmar, cinch the tie-downs at the gunwales, and step back onto the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Spring's holding with slack now. Bow line's good. Engine cover still needs to go on. Rain's hitting horizontal — she's right, get inside and button the cover from the cockpit.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:35

Come in now! The swell is hitting the pilings!

Bolt the door and watch the barometer drop.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get knocked off those boards if he stays out there another minute.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:37

Coming.

step off the dock onto the porch, pull the heavy cottage door shut behind me, and slide the bolt home

💭 peek at the thought
Swell's hammering the dock pilings now. Cover's on. Bilge pump can wait — she's right, get inside. Door's solid.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:37

Get away from the door. The wind is picking up speed.

Sit on the kitchen chair and cradle my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. I hope he didn't get the salt spray in his eyes.
