The First Gusts

The first gust of wind rattles the leaky cottage shutters, and the heavy air finally breaks into a down.

The air is heavy as the clouds thicken, signaling a shift in the dry weather. Kevin and Jenny prepare the cottage for the expected supply boat arrival tomorrow while monitoring the drop in pressure on the barometer.

🌿 Jenny02:37

The barometer is dropping fast, Kevin. Check the radio one last time.

Winced as I shifted my weight to wrap the damp poultice around my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come because of this pressure, I'm going to lose the seeds in that tin.

On it.

power on the shortwave radio and scan the supply boat frequency, then the coast guard working channel, then Tom's old frequency

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The needle's been sliding all afternoon. If the boat's coming, it'll call in the next hour or not at all. My hand's already on the knob.

way but the wind and the waves on that line.

Leaned back against the chair, watching the needle on the radio dance.

💭 peek at the thought
Just static. The island is swallowing the signal tonight.

🔧 Kevin02:39

Nothing on 16. Nothing on the Coast Guard working channel. Tom's frequency's dead too — just atmospherics.

log the radio check in the notebook with time and conditions, then set the radio to standby on the supply boat frequency

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing but static and the storm eating the ionosphere. Same as every night this week. She's watching me watch the needle, waiting for me to say something useful.

🌿 Jenny02:41

Then we wait. The pressure is too low for them anyway.

Rubbed the swollen skin around the bandage, feeling the heat throbbing through the cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't make it through this, I'll be out of antibiotics by Tuesday.

🔧 Kevin02:41

Aye. They won't come in this. We batten down proper and ride it out.

walk to the porch and check the generator storm lashings, then the water tank overflow, then the garden tarp corners

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. 979 and falling. The skipper won't risk the crossing in this, not for a routine supply run. We'll be on our own another ten days at least. Need to make sure the dock holds and the dinghy's secured proper.
